More information on Soby's New South Cuisine

Back in 1997, owners David Williams (a chef) and Carl Sobocinsky (an architect) bought and gutted this building, a down-at-the-heels shoe store, and transformed it into a stylish, award-winning restaurant. Restored wide-plank blond floors and brick walls complement a curving, hand-tooled bar and an airy, minimalist mezzanine to create a fusion of old and new. The menu, similarly stylistic, puts a new spin on old favorites: Spinach salad is tossed with dried cranberries, shaved Smithfield ham, and bleu cheese; fried green tomatoes are layered with jalapeño-pimento cheese; and earthy shrimp 'n' grits is dressed up with haricots verts and roasted peppers. Wine is serious business here; the cellar holds over 5,000 bottles, and the restaurant hosts a regular schedule of wine-themed dinners.
