Gallic owner Raymond Blanc made his fame with Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons outside Oxford. Since that time his empire has expanded, now taking in the city of Birmingham. In his latest outpost, he brings not haute cuisine but a brasserie-style regional French menu to Birmingham and does so exceedingly well. It's one of your best bets for dining in the city. The setting is sophisticated and modern, with polished metal, lots of plate glass, and blond woods. You get not only an excellent cuisine, but fine service and good value for the money.The cookery is competent, the presentation a strong point, and the ingredients are first-rate. Dip into such delights as confit of guinea fowl with wild mushrooms, or chargrilled scallops with mashed potatoes. The pan-fried sea bream filet is also an excellent choice, served in the French tradition with ratatouille and raw tomato coulis. For an appetizer, you can do no better than the deep-fried goat cheese with olive tapenade and tomato chutney. In summer a pumpkin risotto appears, or else you might prefer a delectable soup made of Jerusalem artichoke. The smoothest finish is chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream.
