This hypertrendy restaurant occupies the former apartment house of Communist patriarch Karl Marx, who would never recognize it. It was an Italian restaurant (also called Quo Vadis) from 1926 until the mid-1990s, when its interior was ripped apart and reconfigured into the stylish, postmodern place you'll find today. The stark street-level dining room is a museum-style showcase for dozens of modern paintings by the controversial Damien Hirst and other contemporary artists. But many bypass the restaurant altogether for the upstairs bar, where Hirst has put a severed cow's head and a severed bull's head on display in separate aquariums. Why? They're catalysts to conversation and satirical odes to the destructive effects of Mad Cow Disease.Quo Vadis is associated with Marco Pierre White, but don't expect to see the temperamental culinary superstar; as executive chef, he functions as only a consultant. Also, don't expect that the harassed and overburdened staff will have the time to pamper you. As for the food? It's appealingly presented and very good, but not nearly as artful or innovative as the setting might lead you to believe. Starters include such lusty fare as eggplant and zucchini fritters or baked potatoes with caviar and sour cream. Authentically flavorful mains feature spaghettini with lobster or grilled sea bass with fresh oranges and olive oil. The grilled Aberdeen Angus steak appears unexpectedly with grilled oysters. For dessert, who else tops vine-ripened white peaches with champagne? Enticing new additions are always cropping up in the chef's repertoire, depending on what's good and fresh in any season.
