More information on Tujague's Restaurant

Dating back to 1856, Tujague's (pronounced Two-jacks) is every bit as venerable and aged as the big-name New Orleans restaurants (heck, the mirror in the bar has been in place for 150 years!), and yet no one ever mentions it -- which is a shame. It may not be a knockout, but it's authentic and solid, and its return (after some interior issues) in December 2005 was another relief.Tujague's does not have a menu; instead, each night it offers a set six-course (it seems one course is coffee) meal. You will eat what they cook that night. Don't expect fancy or nouvelle: This is real local food. Meals start with a sinus-clearing shrimp rémoulade (with red or white sauce, or both if you can't make up your mind), heads to a fine gumbo (not as thick as some, but that's not a liability), then on to a sample of a so-tender-you-cut-it-with-a-fork brisket, and then on to whatever is happening for an entree. There's likely to be filet mignon for sure, but skip it (it's ordinary) in favor of items such as stuffed shrimp or perfect fettuccine or Bonne Femme chicken, a baked garlic number from the original owner's recipe (the restaurant has it every night, but you have to ask for it). Finish with a classic -- the right-on-the-money bread pudding. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice.
