Back Bay Grill has long been one of Portland's best-regarded restaurants, offering an upscale, contemporary ambience in a somewhat downscale neighborhood. The innovative menu is revamped seasonally. Diners may start with the popular terrine of house-cured gravlax and smoked salmon with marinated red onions (it's almost always on the menu), or perhaps local mussels or sautéed foie gras. Among main courses, look for heavenly dishes such as rack of lamb with butter-braised potatoes and fava beans; Casco Bay cod with a champagne-and-olive oil sauce, filet mignon with gnocchi, or lavender-marinated duck breast served with a duck confit, lingonberry sauce, and a risotto of English peas and Vidalia onions.
