As the saying goes, Wow! Laulau! The Halekulani's sister hotel has redefined the buffet and made it -- surprise! -- a culinary attraction. Breakfast, sushi lunch, noodles, Hawaiian, and seafood/prime rib are among the buffet themes featured throughout the week. The Hawaiian buffet is great for visitors -- it gives them a taste of real, down-home Hawaiian food with an elegance that is nonthreatening. It's multicultural, too, so you have roast duck and Portuguese bean soup among the Hawaiian staples of laulau, beef stew, chicken long rice, kalua pig, squid luau, and the pièce de résistance, Kauai (or sometimes, Molokai) taro au gratin, a brilliant treatment of the Hawaiian corn that is too often misunderstood.
