Tommy Toy's Cuisine Chinoise

If you want romantic, extravagant Chinese, come to Tommy's: Lavish, dark, unmistakably Asian, and perhaps the only Chinese restaurant where dressing up is apropos, here the dining room is glamorized with mood-lit candelabras and antique paintings. Most evenings, the restaurant is crowded with tourists, while some locals are more likely to come for the fixed-price lunches. Perhaps that's because not much changes on the expensive, French-influenced Chinese menu. But that's fine with the loyalists who return year after year for beautifully presented minced squab in leaves of lettuce; sautéed lobster with mushrooms, chives, and angel-hair crystal noodles; puff-pastry-topped creamy lobster bisque; Peking duck accompanied by lotus buns and sweet-and-tangy plum sauce; beef medallions; and a dessert of fluffy peach mousse. The a la carte menu flaunts vanilla prawns and other delicacies. During my visits, the food has varied from fine to very good, but the portions are always substantial and the environment is memorable.
