Atlanta grew up around the Varsity, the world's largest drive-in restaurant, opened in 1928 by Frank Gordy (today all six locations are run by his daughter Nancy Simms). This fast-food mecca's greasy feasts are an essential element of the Atlanta experience, and the Varsity draws more celebrities than any other restaurant in town. A 150-foot stainless-steel counter is the hub of the operation, behind which red-shirted cooks and counter people rush out thousands of orders. It's a constant chorus of "What'll ya have? What'll ya have?" with customer responses translated into such esoteric orders as "walk a dog sideways, bag of rags" (a hot dog with onions on the side and potato chips). It takes 200 employees to process the ton of onions, 2,500 pounds of potatoes, 2 miles of hot dogs, and 300 gallons of chili consumed here by throngs of hungry customers each day.Order up a slaw dog or a couple of chili burgers (they're only 2 oz. each), with fries, onion rings, and a frosted orange (a creamy frozen orange drink). Barbecued pork, homemade chicken salad, and deviled-egg sandwiches are other options. And since none of this is health food (though it's all fresh and made from scratch), don't resist the fried apple or peach pie a la mode for dessert. The Varsity's interior is spartan, with seating in large, windowed rooms with Formica tables. Big TVs are always on.
