In an 1875 heritage building on a prominent Market corner are this sprawling fish restaurant; the casual, less expensive upstairs cafe, Coasters, which stays open through the afternoon and offers pastas, pizzas, and fish and chips; and the basement tavern, Vineyards, which features boutique wines and microbrews and live jazz Wednesday and Sunday nights. The main room is enclosed by rough wood and brick, with nautical trappings and old advertising signs. Fish cooked without artifice is often the most satisfying, not to mention fast out of the kitchen, and waits between courses aren't long. The dauntingly large menu includes just about any marine creature available at the docks that day, cooked to your preference. One Brobdingnagian repast called the "Marine Platter" incorporates a half lobster, Alaskan crab legs, two jumbo tiger shrimp, a smoked salmon filet, sea scallops, crabmeat-stuffed mushroom caps, onion rings, and rice pilaf -- for C$47 (US$38), the costliest item on an otherwise moderate card. All-you-can-eat mussels, for example, are only C$12 (US$9.60). They're proud of their wine list -- the Alsatian Rieslings go well with most of these dishes.
