Today we hit Oregon. And trees. Lots of them. All day. For hundreds of miles. Oregon is full of them! The forests are really amazing but do get a bit monotonous after a while, although there are some really cool rivers which also run through them to provide some interest once in a while! The radio stations in Oregon also leave a lot to be desired. There is a choice of 3 genres – Country, Christian and Heavy Rock. Nothing else. So, we reverted to the iPods again and continued on our quest to play every Greatest Hits album we each possess. Today’s classics included Prince and Marvin Gaye, so we sang along to the trees as we passed them!

We visited the only national park in Oregon which is Crater Lake and is a lake on the top of a volcano. Apparently it took 800 years to fill it with rain and snow. It was amazing and there were lots of signs saying do not fall over the edge as you will die. Nice. To the point however. It was a really deep blue colour – the photos don’t necessarily do it justice but I try! There were also great views of the surrounding countryside (trees as far as the eye could see, which was quite far as it was very clear) but we saw a couple of forest fires in the distance – people obviously bar-be-queing when they shouldn’t be! We then drove on, through more forest, to Eugene, which is where all the students hang out apparently. One interesting diversion was seeing some prison inmates clearing litter from the side of the highway dressed in orange. At least they got to get outside and work on their tans a bit!

We are now sat in a Days Inn in Eugene and compared to the places we have been staying the past couple of nights this feels like luxury! They even provide sewing kits if you need it – wow! However, the promise of free wireless internet has yet to be forthcoming, but the man at the front desk has promised me that he is going to go and reset the routers so fingers crossed that I can upload this entry, as well as yesterday’s and check my emails! (Am now in reception doing this as it is still not working in my room – grr!. However, have just been out for a really nice Italian meal that the front desk man recommended so he has redeemed himself a bit!).

Oh, the other interesting thing that happened today was that I got mobile reception back – yay! After 3 days of being in the middle of nowhere!

Tomorrow we head to Portland, before Seattle and then Vancouver – woo hoo!

Distance travelled today – 340 miles.

Bearwatch – 0. Apparently they don’t like these trees.

Great photos, really give a good taste of what you're seeing. The miles are lapping up and seems like all is going well apart from intermittent reception on all forms of communication! Mxx
