A peaceful Portuguese fishing village

We took the train from Fes to El Jadida, a much preferred mode of travel than the buses. We were pleased to find very few other tourists in El Jadida, as it is mostly a beach resort for Moroccans. We got the best prices and some very peaceful walks around the city walls due to this. We stayed in the Hotel de France, which had clearly been a very glorious place in the old days, but those days were many decades ago. It was an easy walk to reach the beach as well as the old Portugese fort where we attempted to get lost in the citadel walls and labrynthin alleys, but the town was too small to really get lost in. We also had great pleasure climbing into the 15th century cistern in the center of the fort: the scene for one of Orsen Wells' movies (Othello). This cistern was eerie and beautiful, with only a few centimeters of water in the center to reflect the light streaming in. El Jadida was a very peaceful and charming fishing village that helped sooth us after the  exhausting days of Fes.
