Eels, Herring, and Pike

We arrived in Elburg to find eel was king. There were many shops selling smoked eel. Reluctantly we bought some. Surprisingly it was alot better than we had thought. It wasnt slimy as expected. The texture and color was that as a mild white fish.

After we lived through that, we thought we would really "be Dutch", so we bought raw herring with pickles and onions. Well lets put it this way. The pickles were the best of the lot. I have had pickled herring in Sweden before. This didnt hold a candle to it.    Raw herring just isnt that tasty.

There were kids on the dock that proceeded to catch a huge Pike. It was scary to know something that big was under the boat we were on. The men all loved seeing it. Us ladies, stayed our distance.
