Getting into the groove of living in Nottingham
From Europe For A Year: Updates From Abroad in Nottingham, United Kingdom on Oct 03 '09
September 28th - October 2nd
Pretty much settled in as much as we can get, this week Joel and I both started classes and we seem to have pretty reasonable workloads. Nothing so far that seems overwhelming.
We had a beautiful afternoon on thursday and Joel and I finally had our first "non-terrible" food experience in England. We've unfortunately been sticking to subway and Burger King (except for what we made in our dorm) because evry place we've tried had very bland food. Not to mention the service usually isnt good (tipping is not socially permitted here becasue they get paid verywell to begin with) so it's not like we can "punish" bad service by lack of tip like we can in the US. pretty frustrating ordeal. But this place we went to, Yates's, had decent food and good time and good value. Beautifully decorated and had second floor balcony overlooking market square.
Later that night we celebrated Felipe's b-day and housewarming party
We had also just recieved our loan checks so we were in good spirits
This weekend the weather started looking more like fall and got quite cool and windy. We went to the Goose Fair which has been known to be around since 1284 as it was mentioned in one of King Endward I charters. It was only ever canceled during 1646 due to the bubonic plague and during the 2 world wars. Its name is derived from the thousands of geese that were driven from Lincolnshire to be sold in Nottingham. Anyways, a little history lesson for you all :-)
I went on some pretty crazy rides that by the end of the night I joked with Joel that I may have possibly promised God that i'd become a nun if he just me out alive! lol ;-)
Today we tried our legs out on rollerblading with the inline-skating club...they were having a free testers session today and afterwords we went to a few secondhand shops and browsed around.
anyways, good weekend so far, not much planned for sunday (tomorrow) probably will be catching up on assigned reading
hugs and kisses!
