Orchha is a 16th Century medieval town full of temples, palaces and Chhatris.

We arrived at Jhansi train station after a long train ride from Delhi at about two o’clock in the afternoon. We took a 45 minute Tuk-Tuk ride in to Orchha and entered the town through the gate to the old city. The name Orchha means hidden Palace.

Orchha was the capital of Bundela from 16th century to 1783 and is a walled city on the banks of a river. The river provides the local people with water to drink, wash themselves and their clothes – even today this is the way of life for the people – see the photograph.

We stayed in part of the old city, by the river and one of the palaces in a rather nice fixed tent complete with air-conditioning! (The average temperature at this time of year is approaching 40 degrees!)

You are able to roam freely amongst all of the palaces and temples which we did. Because it is so quiet we felt like Indiana Jones findings bats, huge beehives and even wild dogs sleeping in the shadows… And of course many cows roaming the streets.
