There is an ongoing slogan or campagin within this city to 'Keep Austin weird'. I think that in other words means keep Austin 'not like Texas' really, because this place is quite cool and liberal-ish.

The hostel I'm staying in is based just outside of the city, and has a lake right running right behind it. So it is quite nice to sit out in the 37 degree heat and dip your feet into the water! Of the tourist things, the Capitol building is massive, bigger than the one Washington. I went to history of Texas musuem which was really good, Texas has a really interesting history. I rented a bike on Wednesday to do a nice leisurely cycle of the park, or so I thought! I ended up taking a trail route, practicley negotiating my way through mountain rocks in 35 degree heat, I went 2 miles before realising I had to turn back. That was not good for the old hydration levels!

then the cops picked him up, gave him a right good beating, and then gave him a lift home to the hostel

As for my resting, I managed to last 3 days without drinking, before splashing out on Wednesday night on $1 vodkas. Interesting story on Wednesday night, one of the English lads was a bit drunk and told to leave the pub, but then the cops picked him up, gave him a right good beating, and then gave him a lift home to the hostel! Texan hospitality eh!

Austin has a really good music scene with 6th street full of bars. This hostel is strangely fully of English and to a lesser extent Irish, which gives the place a different kind of feel.

Im off to Dallas tomorrow but only for a couple of days, Dallas is not supposed to be any great shakes. Then on Tuesday Im off to Vegas- wey hey. Today is really the first time Ive began to feel a bit homesick looking for a comformtable bed and familiarity. Im sure new city will re-energise me though! Some pics on Picasa, let me know the craic at home!
