When our group entered the theater at Aspendos, there was no doubt of our admiration for the preservation of the ancient Greco-Roman building (it is the best preserved theater in antiquity). However, it was not the seating for seven thousand, the vaulted arches, or even the intact stage building that left me breathless. The most impressive part of the theater was that I was able to hear the conversation of two Russian tourists entering the orchestra – from the top of the building! The theater’s phenomenal acoustics were enough to make me sit and just listen, though of course it was hard to focus on sound when my sense of sight was so busy taking in the architecture itself. Though thoroughly impressed by this theater and the other, less preserved (yet no less breathtaking) theaters visited during our study, I do not feel as if a further explanation of the architecture here would be half as efficient as posting the pictures. Therefore, I will let the photos speak for themselves, though you may have to listen closely. Unfortunately, the acoustics here do not compare with those at Aspendos…
