Sorry it's been so long
From Vasa Recording Project: Sweden in Stockholm, Sweden on Jul 13 '09
Well, I know it's been quite a long wait since I first started my trip blog to Sweden and unfortunately I have limited time and access to the internet so pictures are not available at this time. But here is a quick recount of what has happnened since I last spoke to you. I departed Greenville on July 2nd, heading to Charlotte (delayed), then to Philadelphia (delayed) and then to Stockholm (plane caught on fire over the Atlantic had to make an emergency landing at Hartford, Connecticut---delayed). So we got to Stockholm 5 hours after we were supposed to land- we missed our ride and had to take the Arlanda Express into town and then the bus to the Vasa Museum. Despite all of this we are on board a minesweeper from 1945 and the Vasa is one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen in my life--right up there with York Minster in the UK.
We started work on Monday (July 7th) and the week flew by with the recording of the starboard and port sides of the vessel-recording the beams, the ceilings, and the gunports on the lower deck. It's especially amusing to see all the tourists attempt to get on board the Vasa with us as we have to enter codes and unlock gates to get onto the ship--sadly we must tell them 'no'--and they look at us with longing eyes; and you would too if you saw this place.
I've seen the Skansen out-door musem and zoo as well as the Royal Palace, the history museum, and the Old Town of Stockholm---everything is beautiful and the harbor in which we are centrally located is magnificant. There is still more work to be done but we are moving quite rapidly in the recording of the dimensions.
This weekend there may be opportunity for a cruise to Helsinki, Finland-- but I may also do a 1000 island cruise through the archipelago.
So, hopefully there will be more to come from me in the future but for now this recap will have to do.
