Like many of my classmates, I had slight concerns about what the Turks and Cypriots might think of me as an American, and my family had concerns about my safety.  It turns out I had almost no cause for concern.  We visited many places in Turkey, but I never once felt disliked because of my nationality.  The Turk's hospitality was outstanding, far surpassing American hospitality as I have experienced it.  We never had trouble in restaurants or shops because we didn't understand Turkish, which would have been the source of many dirty looks and snide comments in America.  The service we experienced was incredible as well.  Restaurants were never understaffed, and we always received excellent service whether we were in a small doner shop or an expensive restaurant.
