Dead on my Feet
From Europe (Summer 09) in Frankfurt, Germany on Jun 18 '09
I was oddly calm getting off the plane and making my way through the airport. After talking to the lady at information I was sent down to the train area to see about getting to my destination (which wasn’t on any train route map she could find) and exchanging currency.
After waiting in line and being handed a paper that showed my destination and the train numbers, I was sent out to get my tickets from a green machine. I stood there, staring at the machine and wondering ‘What the heck!?’ until someone came behind me to use the machnine. I stepped out of the way and kinda freaked out a bit. I realized I wasn’t at all prepared for what I’d gotten myself into, I was tuck across a great deal of land, an ocean, and another great deal of land from any family, without the use of my phone or battery for my laptop. I wasn’t handling it very well.
It took a few minutes to calm down and from there I went back to the guy that had handed me the paper and found out I could purchase the ticket there. After that I got on the first train that took me to the main area.
From there I couldn’t figure out where the train I was supposed to switch over to was and by the time I found it, it was pulling away. After that I wandered around for a few minutes until I finally found an information desk where I was told another train would be heading that way in 27minutes. So I went back to the area and sat down to wait for the train.
As it turned out, Hofheim was in the middle of nowhere. Once there I asked around, showing the hotel name for a few locals, who only told me ‘Marxheim’ A couple pointed to the south, but I had no idea how far south. One person managed to tell me to take the bus so I headed to the bus area.
When the bus arrived I tried to ask the driver if the bus would take me near the hotel and how to get to the hotel from the stop. After five minutes, the bus driver, with the help of a local woman managed to get me to understand that the hotel was about 15 meters from the bus stop. I tried to ask how much the bus was, but at that point I was told to “just get on the bus” – as far as I understood.
When I finally made it to the hotel, which was on top of a killer hill (not in a good way), I pretty much crashed. I only meant to sleep for about three hours, but I was out for 6-7. When I woke up I decided it was time to go in search of food. After receiving very general directions (‘Down the hill’) I set off in search of food.
Once I reached the point where the bus had dropped me off it started to rain. After wandering around in the rain for a bit and getting lost a couple times I had made my way back to where the train had dropped me off. At that point I found out that a lot of things were closed around 6-7pm.
The next day I woke up around 10am, packed up, and made my way to my host’s home. Upon arriving there I proceeded to do nothing that day as I drifted between sleep and awake on and off all day.
Today I went in search of a local phone – failed –, acquired a map of Frankfurt, and dragged myself back to my host’s house, still dead on my feet. The plan is to go out to the river later and I’ve got a ride-share set up to take me out to Trier tomorrow.
