A great way to break up a long trip

From Lima we only really wanted to get to Ecuador.  We had done everything we came for in Peru.  Unfortunately, it's kind of a big country (especially south to north).  Flying was ridiculously expensive (like $500 to Quito from Lima).  So we took a bus.

Our first night bus was like flying in business class.  Cruz Del Sur, the company, had us check in before the bus, gave us tags for our bags, and then sent us in to our bus.  It was a double decker bus, and all the chairs were basically lazy boy recliners.  We had good in-transit food, free drinks, 2 attendents, and 2 nice bathrooms.  It was secure, comfortable and quiet.  Completely unlike any other bus that we took before or since.

Then we shot what's known as "the worst border in Latin America."

At about 9PM, after a 12 hour bus ride, it dumped us off in Trujillo--a nice little colonial town in the middle of the Peruvian coast.  It's main claim to fame is the Chan Chan: a series of ruins left by a pre-Incan civilization.  Unfortunately, everything was made out of adobe--not a very durable material.  But the restored campus is actually pretty impressive.

After one day and night in Trujillo we then hopped a night bus to Tumbes, right on the Ecuadorian border.  Then we shot what's known as "the worst border in Latin America."

But that's another story...
