through WA to Pendleton OR
From Coast to Coast Road Trip USA in Pendleton, United States on Jun 22 '08
We got off to a later start than I had anticipated. Nevertheless, we made it to church and headed out before one o'clock. It was around 60 degress in Skagit Valley when we left. We headed over I-90 to Ellensburg got a bit of rain at the pass, and as we headed down, lo-finally some sun. From those of you from anywhere else but NW Washington, that means a lot. Had to stop at Ellensburg...just over Snoqualmie Pass to fill up-$4.23/gal. Then on to Zillah where we had to get out and snap a few photos of the historic teapot gas station. Who knew?...not even a day out, and our first historic marker. Will the fun continue? Gas price at the tea pot: 79 cents. Quote of the day..."why don't we just get gas here?" from our Curly Headed Kid...(you can try, but don't expect very good service)
Crossed through the new Palm Springs WA-wine country, I mean Yakima...they have to tell you on a large bulletin board lest you forget; they used to just be Yakima, the place you drove through studded with orchards..but really...now it is a destination since it is wine country. But alsa, we didn't stop, since we were still so close to home, ...into Oregon and our next stop off was in the quaint little town of Echo Oregon. This is a historic town due to being on the Oregon trail. Of interest- one or two pretty restored homes and a site with old wagon fire engines at a little state park...I do mean little. It might be listed in Trailer Life as a campground, but all 5 spots were locally inhabited. There is a very cool mission church in this town that is worth the drive by for the building architecture. We ended up camping at the Wildhorse Casino and Campground outside of Pendleton Oregon. Despite apprehension about the casino and camping next to carnies, this was a great place to stay. After sandwiches for dinner, a swim in a nice pool, and breaking into song with carnie dude, we enjoyed a pleasant evening with a beautiful view of rolling hills and fields, sunset, and decent stargazing. Music we traveled by today: U2 Bad, as we went through Everett and headed out. Ramblin'man made a nice accompaniment to the South Eastern WA territory. And a good time was had by all.
Why not gas up in Zillah Wa?
