They Say It Changes When The Sun Goes Down
From Viviendo El Sueño in Galapagos Islands, Ecuador on Apr 19 '09
Not having any kind of phone makes staying in contact with my friends here difficult. I am not helped by the fact that, of my friends here on the island, six live under the same roof (two Ecuadorians and four Brits). The fact that I live on top of the hill, in the opposite direction from beaches and the town, adds to the complications. Luckily we have devised a system that solves this problem, at least at night: Vooquis bar at 9:30 if you want to hang out. This place is the closest thing to Cheers I have found in South America. The same amiable bartender, Elly, works there every night and any music that she has on her computer we can play at will. Also there is a pool table and an old school game of Jenga. Saturday the 17th we started the night playing the Roxanne drinking game. For the uninitiated the rules are as follows:
1. Play the song Roxanne by The Police
Vooquis bar at 9:30 if you want to hang out...
2. Form two teams and assign one team to drink when the song says “Roxanne” and the other team to drink when the song says “red light.”
3. Do not repeat.
After that we played a few card games (Ring of Fire aka Kings Cup) that always had one person wearing aviator sunglasses indoors at night. That should be a decent indication of what our night was like. I am almost positive I got home at 4:30; a friend said a group of us were still at the bar when he left at 4:45 and the people I walked home with said we got back at 5. So from that triangulation I’ll let you, dear reader, make up your mind.
