Our spring break journey to Belize started out great. We actually arrived in Belize CIty a few minutes early, got through immigration and customs quickly and, within 30 minutes of landing, were boarding a Tropic Air flight to the San Pedro airstrip on Ambergris Caye. As we waited for the hotel golf cart to pick us up at the airstrip, it finally hit us that we were in the tropics rather than and cold and rainy Pacific NW. It was HOT. And it felt soooo good.

Its so unlike us to do just a beach vacation.
The next four days followed a fairly simply routine – get up, have a light breakfast, swim, walk to a nearby café for lunch, rest, more pool time, rest, walk into San Pedro for dinner, stroll back via the beach, read, sleep. Repeat. For variation, we went snorkeling at Shark Ray Alley and Hol Chan Marine Preserve, played in the ocean, and rented bikes and explored a bit of the northern part of the caye. The snorkeling was fantastic, expecially swimming near the rays and among schools of fish, though the coral reefs were not as colorful as many we've seen elsewhere.

Its so unlike us to do just a beach vacation. But this time, in retrospect, we really wish we had focused on the beach. A few more days on the beach and maybe a one day shore excursion would have been ideal. BUT, that was not the plan that we had laid out. And, so, after five nights on the caye, we checked out of our wonderful suite as the Caribbean Villas, headed back to the San Pedro airstrip and began our way to western Belize.
