Day 5. The plan is to walk to Camp Cuernos via Camp Italiano, with a walk up Valle Frances. Nice plan. The day was sunny but the wind was strong enough to whip up massive plumes of spray from the whitecaps it was creating and dump them on us as we walked so it wasn’t really counted as rain. We arrived at Cuernos at about 7pm after walking for the best part of 9 hours. The interlude up into Valle Frances was definitely worth the extra time. We were able to leave our packs (literally) in the camp at Italiano and walk free into the valley. Lucky eh because again this was all uphill. The walk up the valley was sunny with little wind, a welcome respite. Beautiful views of snow capped mountains from the lookout and snapped some great photos. Dinner that night was a full packet of powdered mash potatoes with a little bit of cheese from a pasta mix we had spare. Yum yum yum. A quick plastic cup full of wine, shared, washed it all down nicely. There are some things you just have to carry (until you find out you can buy them everywhere).
just remind me again ... why are we here, soaking wet and cold...bloody cold in fact!
Day 6. Planned walk to Camp Chileno. Via Camp Las Torres this will take us about 5 hours. We set off early because for some reason Kaye decided that because she is awake early we should go. Even to date (6 weeks on) it has been the only time we get an early start unless it is for a bus. We walk in the rain for about 3 hours and arrive at Las Torres and make a pretty final decision to skip the torres camp and head straight up to Chileno. What the heck. We are already cold and wet, how much colder and wetter could we get? It only took us about an hour to find out. Crossing the tree line as we climbed up the mountain ensured we were truly soden and cold to the bone by the time we reached our destination. Putting up the tent was discussed en route and we both agreed that a night in bed would be a nice reward. As it turned out we spent two nights with food being cooked for us. Very nice.
