Moving east, the lovely city of Prague
From Backpacking round Europe 08 in Prague, Czech Republic on Aug 18 '08
After a very scenic train journey from Berlin to Prague, we arrive in our A&O youth hostel. We get into our room to meet a very strange guy we dubbed psychedelic Paul from Canada. We decided to head down to the hostel bar and try some Eastern European beer. The beer here is amazing!! After this we decide to head into town. Prague or Praha as its known is very different to western Europe. Having never been as far east as this beore, it kind of gave me the feeling of soviet Russia. It seemed this place was 20 years behind the UK. None the less is felt very characteristic. We took the tram into town, buying a ticket for this seemed to be a massive problem, so we eneded up not paying for any trams during our stay in Praha.
In town we hit the first pub/bar we could find. After several delicious servings of the fine liquid refreshments on offer we move onto the next bar. A few too many pints and a few more bars later Josh, Weston, psychedelic Paul and I hit one last place, a restaurent for a bite to eat. I decided to go very traditional and ordered a typical Czech meal, I cannot remember what it was, but i remember polishing off the plate. It was midnight by now and we had been on the go all day! The barman/waiter/manager was particularly friendly, he seemed to be getting a bit too over excited behind the bar with what I can only assume was his woman. He insisted he served us up some absynth, Weston and I accepted his offer. At this point we were all hammered. Our new barman friend offered us a toke of the finest Czech marijuana, we were very great full. After the excitement for the evening we headed back to the hostel. One of the hardest parts about travelling I found was getting back to where you want to be late at night. We had no idea which way to go, or which tram we needed. Some very friendly Czech people helped us out!

The next day we walked into the old town. This was real nice square to chill and have a drink, spot of lunch etc. We saw the astronomical clock which was cool. We walked passed a sex machine museum, but decided to go against it. We decided to go to the Jewish quater aka Josefov. We purchased a ticket that allowed us to entre 4 or 5 synagogues, one of which has the legendary golumn locked in the attick. The buildings were old dating back to 13th century and the architecture was phenomenal. The synagogues had excibitions detailing the Jewish people in Prague and the Czech Rep. through the ages. I found this interesting and informative. One particulare synagogue, the Spanish synagogue was particularly beautiful, it is often described as the most beautiful synagogue in Europe. All in all it was a nice day out.
After this we had a rome around the city bumping into more familiar shops such as armani and Bang & Olufsen, which was a little closer to home. The guy in Bang & Olufsen gave us an exceptional demo of his £120 000 speaker set up which left my trembling. We then headed upto Charles Bridge. The views are great here, all sorts of art work and entertainment going on here. The view of the castle high above the city is prominant. We were approached by a tour company who guid you around the city on Segway's. For those who don't know what a Segway is, its an electric personal transport vechiel with two wheels which you stand on. The tour guid was offering a free go on it to sell their tour. This was all happening on the bridge. Josh and Weston went first, it looked really fun, they enjoyed it. My turn came up, I ended up heading straight into the curb and was flung off and ran myself over with it. Everyone was pissing themselves in absoloute hysterics. It was a funny moment. We continued crossing the bridge to head towards the castle. It took a good hour hiking up what can only be described as a small mountain to the top. We finally made it to the castle and had panomaric views of the city. We headed back to the youth hostel.
The next day, we headed back to the old town and had a few. We then sat on this island in the middle of the rever which had a bar there. We had a few more and just sat off the whole day. The weather was great. We later got a rowing boat and boated around the river. Before we left Prague we went back to our favourite restaurant. Prague, loved it!
