Girl Scouts, Robbery and Sarah Palin

Local News Stories

The news in Alaska is different. One story reported that two men had chased and shot a moose out of hunting season in a small village about 500 miles north of Anchorage. This was not the crime however. They did not harvest the meat. In a village that lives subsistence, the fact of wasting the meat is a major crime.

There was also a robbery of about $800 from two ten-year-old Girls Scouts selling cookies in one of the large supermarkets. The thief fled and escaped in a car but someone got the license number and he was captured in a few hours. The store took up a collection and got $3000 from customers there and the following Saturday, Governor Sarah Palin came and sold cookies for them. Lots of indignation about stealing from the Girl Scouts.

Language in USA

My VISA credit card was not accepted at that same supermarket.  When I called to see why the old card was rejected, I got a recorded message in English and Russian. Strange! I decided to complete the call and made another. Turned out there had been a security breach and the card was replaced. When the VISA person asked if I had gotten my new card, I just laughed and told her of my five months’ worth of mail. I have no idea why the message was in Russian.

The Census Bureau is recruiting people for temporary positions. When I called, the first question was; “Do you want to continue in English or Spanish?” That seemed normal and I continued.

The Volcanic Eruption

Mt. Redoubt is near Anchorage and we don’t see any ash here. However, I get a box of fresh fruits and vegetables (www.fullcirclefarm.com) from an organic farm down south and the flights have been affected. The delivery should have been yesterday but they don’t know quite when it will get here. I hope the stuff is still fresh when it does get here.

Home

Although there is still too much snow for my taste and I use the bus because my truck is in two feet of the stuff, I thought you might like to see some pictures of Juneau and southeast Alaska:
