As we arrived into Colonia, Uruguay Ian finished the last of the Narnia books. We took a short five minute taxi ride from the port to Posada de la Flor to our hostel. The hostel was a quaint two story building with an atrium filled with plants, tables and chairs. We were in the Rose room. After settling in, it was close to two pm and were all starving, so we went to lunch at a café on Gral Flores, the main street in town. Lori decided to have a Waldolf salad and Ian had grilled chicken, salad and chips. After lunch, we explored the city as much as we could in the light dizzle. The city was founded in 1680 to smuggle goods from Rio de la Plata to Buenos Aires. The town had a series of colonial styled building lining cobblestone streets. We went inside Iglesia Matriz, which is the oldest church in Uruguay. It was founded in 1680 and was rebuilt in several different styles over the years before becoming the simple church that it is today. It started to downpour around this time, so we ducked into a jewelry store much to Lori’s delight. She managed to purchase a pair of glass earrings before leaving. As the weather was not great and we thought we had seen most of the town, we spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing. We met the group for dinner at eight pm and went to another place not far from the hostel. Lori was craving bacon and was in luck when there was a bacon salad on the menu. Ian had a tasty steak sandwich.

The bus to Montevideo did not leave until 10:30 am, so we were able to sleep in and have breakfast at 9:30 am.
