We arrived in Bern very very very excited. We only stayed here for one night but Bern provided us with some of the best activities we have done to date. We arrived in bern and the snow was still continuing to fall which made this place even more wonderful. The capital of Switzerland suited the country to a tee. The capital is extremely attractive it has one of the most beautiful old towns (which actually has a covered area for pedestrians to walk under, unlike any other european city). The views surrounding the city were as beauitful as any we have come across. The only downfall of Bern was, the still in operation Bear Pit. It is a very small area cut down in a section of the city which has concrete blocks scuttered around and a very bored brown bear. We both struggled to watch the bear for more time than we had to.

The two reasons we were so excited to come to this city were an ice hockey game and an Onion Festival (only held once a year). We headed off to the hockey game the night we arrived. We had bought the tickets a couple of days early and couldn't wait. The game we went to see was between the Bern Bears and the Zurich Lions - the two top teams. We stood with Bear supporters and like soccer fans they were crazy. They cheered and chanted any chance they got. The bears with a sudden death ending won the game 3 - 2. It was a very exciting match and well worth freezing in the stands for.

The next day was the day of Meagan's Dream the ONION FESTIVAL. It began at 5.00am and went all day. We changed our plans slightly so we could make the day, but before we went all we knew about it was there was going to be some strong onion involvement and confetti (we couldn't quite work out what confetti and onions had in common but we soon found out). The festival was really a big market. It consited of stall after stall selling onion plates and onions turned into various humours objects such as dummies, elephants and little man (to Meagan's dismay there was not enough of the actual eating of onions). The confetti side of things really was the highlight of the market. The theory was that once a year it was ok to throw handfulls of coloured confetti at complete strangers and everyone was fare game the young, the old it didn't matter. It was also ok to hit people on the head with a squeaky hammer. We decided that it was only right to get involved in the festivities so we purchased a big bag of confetti and began having wars with complete strangers. It was the funniest festival we have been in and really was one of our highlights of the year. Oh and there was more fantastic garlic bread and some kind of wurst for David - We were in heaven
