Day #3 of our cruise (we spent two days in Venice) was docked in Split, Croatia.  This was the first time for all three of us in this city and most of the attraction was Diocletian's Palace, which encompasses what is left of the old city.  The palace was built in the third century AD is is amazingly well preserved - current residents of Split reside within the palace walls and it is filled with modern shops.

The outside of the palace walls is very modern like any big city.  We came across the statue of Ggru Niski, a 10th century bishop that introduced Croatian language to the church and defied the Catholic Church's insistence for religious services to be conducted in Latin (which many could not understand).  Today, it is said that if you rub the statue's toe you will experience good luck.  Indeed, we saw many natives pause and detour when walking by to rub the bronze toe!
