So here we are in Bogota! The flights were brilliant, our own little tvs and general comfort. Made the mistake of taking a maleria tablet on an empty stomache, so despite being in Toronto Airport for about 4 hours, managed to throw my guts up before getting on another, less fancy, plane down to Bogota!

We arrived in the airport and ashamedly used absolutely no spanish, but after a 20 hour plane journey it was all I could do to point at things. Taxi por favor.

The backpackers we´re staying in is great, a brilliant first place to stay. At 6 squid a night its more expensive than others that we´ll stay in, but we get a great big room with onsuite. Feel very safe there, its like a gated community. Lots of world-weary travellers imparting wisdom, free coffee, general friendly atmosphere.

Bogota is an amazing city. The economy here is on the up, and you can really tell. There are men in suits everywhere, mainly crossing the most dangerous roads you´ve ever seen and the general buzz of a busy metropolitan city. We spend the first day just exploring, and eating. The food is mad! You get a set meal for between 40p and 2 pounds and its 3 courses. But you´re not always sure what you get, for breakfast today we had beef soup, followed by eggs and croissant. supprisingly good!

Today we ventured to a giant food market in the south of the city, and amused ourself by trying to buy things in a language we really don´t understand. We bought tiger prawns and hundreds of veg, which we´re going to cook tonight in the kitchen at the backpackers. When we were leaving the market we decided to buy some oranges from a one-toothed old spanish lady, who tried to give us a shopping bag FULL, about 30 oranges, for 1000 pesos, which is about 30p. We were laughing and trying to tell her we only wanted one, to no avail. We had to carry the big bag home, laughing all the way.

I´m cultivating the art of the siesta at the moment. Midday snooze. mmmmm.

We think we might leave bogota around the weekend and head north on a 20 hour bus journey for tropical weather and hammocks.

much love x x x
