Our Last Day in Vegas

From A month out West in Las Vegas, United States on Jun 15 '08

What a day!  Got an early start and headed out to the Hoover Dam.  Walked across it and took a tour deep inside it, which was cool.  But outside it was so hot!!!  108 degrees, I am told.  The oppressive heat is starting to get to us.  We were finished up at the Hoover Dam by 11a, and already so tired just from the heat.  It just wears you out so quickly.  The Hoover Dam is neat...I was impressed not so much by the enormous size or the beauty of it all, but by everything that went into building it-the forethought, planning, ingenuity of so many people.  Amazing.  On the way home we stopped at a Jewish restaurant that had lots of vegetarian options-good food, bad service (and we were the only ones in the restaurant!)  Got back to the hotel and we were so tired we dropped dead on the beds for 2 or 3 hours.  When I woke up and was getting ready to go out for dinner, I realized my camera was missing.  Hmmm, first mishap. Have to check that restaurant to see if I left it there.  We get in the car, but it wouldn't start.  Hmmm, second mishap. Call Alamo and 45 minutes later a guy comes to jump the battery.  It doesn't work-it's an electrical problem.  They tell me a tow truck will come in two hours,  drop off a new car and pick up the old one.  OK, go with the flow.  So we decide to eat at the hotel, even though we had planned to eat at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino.  But first I need to put the hood down-it was up from when Mr. Battery guy left it that way.  I can't get it down. It's not like one of those bars you lift up and put in place and put back down when youre done.  I ask Laura and Melissa and they can't figure it out either.  OK, I don't want to leave the hood up while we go in for dinner so I find this guy who looks nice and ask him to help me and explain the situation.  He looks at me a little wierd, but walks to the car with me, and just pushes the hood down like you would close a door. That is all there is to it and right about now I feel dumber than all the dumb blondes inside that Hooters Hotel--it was bad!  Then we have dinner and go up to the room while waiting on Mr. Tow truck, and guess what I find in the room?? My camera.  During this time I also went down to the Casino and played one slot machine for my friend TL.....and with the luck I was having tonight, I don't have to tell you how that turned out.  No dice, sorry Pookie.

But we finally made it out and drove down the Strip at night jamming to Melissas music and it was really fun.  Got to the Stratosphere and they have this tower that is the tallest building in Las Vegas and you get to the top and have this amazing view-especially at night.  Then, there are three amusement park rides up there and they are crazy.  The big shot lifts you up around 100 feet, so you are 1,142 feet in the air, and then you free fall that 100 feet while overlooking the entire city.  The next ride, X-Scream, is like a roller coaster arm that shoots you over the side of the building heading down toward the ground before bringing you back-this one is 900 feet in the air.  Then there is Insanity, which is like this claw that takes you off the side of the building, again almost 900 feet off the ground, and the claw opens up so the seats are now at a 70 degree angle looking down and it spins around.  Now, I knew I was not going to do any of these.  Playing horsey with Wayne Brady was as adventurous as I wanted to go.  Laura was gung ho for all three, and Melissa was dead set against it......until the cute boy from South Dakota who was here with his State Championship wrestling team comes up to the girls and asks them if they are riding all three rides and says he would like to go with them.  Oh, the things we will do for boys!! Especially cute ones!!  So, in the end both Melissa and Laura went on all three rides but I just watched.  Laura looked very relaxed and Melissa was hanging on for dear life and I was laughing.  It was a fun evening, after a rough afternoon.  A great way to finish off our visit to Las Vegas.  But we got home  very late--after 1:30am.  Goodnight all!  And thanks for checking my blog--it is nice to get your comments and emails and such!

Beth, you and the girls handled the pit falls well. I think sleeping for a few hours was an awesome buffer to help you recover from the frustrations you'd experienced!! Everything looks different when one is rested. As to the restaurant. My motto has become if no one else is eating there, there is a good reason for it. An aquaintance recommended a local Chinese Restaurant: Yum Yum Good. I paid about $60 for the worst Chinese food which we ended up throwing away. When I went to pick the food up, as it was "Take out," not a sole was in the restaurant. Right then and there I was getting shaky knees and was wondering if I could get away with not paying for the food, leave it and split out the front door. I'm thrilled that your camera wasn't really lost and that you didn't have to retrace your steps. You live right. Such a funny story about your not being able to drop the hood of the car. I still don't think I have a crystal clear understanding of how the guy shut it with such ease. I love hearing about your trip, but know I'm too much of a softy to be able to with stand the heat and sun which you three are exposed to on this trip. While walking in that hot sun I would surly be holding an umbrella above my head to sheild myself from the rays of the sun. I don't like the heat at all. If you'll remember I lived in Washington State on the Olympic Peninsula twice. Two years each time. I like the cooler summers there. I also like to be in cool water not on it. I look forward to reading your next blog. You describe your experiences so well. Stay safe in your travels. Jenny

Hey Beth - sounds like a crazy day - I visited Las Vegas with my sister Judy when niece Kristin was on a collegiate champion bowling team (ok, ok, we're from Buffalo - what do you expect?) I may have told you this but here's why the guy looked at you strangely...my sister and I were constantly followed around the hotel we were in by the security guys - naive me - I thought they liked us until I realized they thought we were "ladies of the night," probably competing with the local talent - can't wait to hear about your next stop Lisa

I wonder if the stranger who kindly dropped your hood had seen you on stage the night before? She who prefers being ridden to riding writes a wonderful blog. Keep living to tell the tale.
