We lazed around Kathmandu for a week waiting for our Indian Visa approval. Yup, it takes at least that long. Kathmandu is a pretty cool city, lots of touristy restaurants and it was especially enjoyable to eat our first decent meal in over two weeks. Cafe "la Dolce Vita" helped take care of that courtesy of their 5AUD pizzas. Delicious. I think we ate there thrice in 6 days. We stayed at a place called the "Souvenir Guest House" recommended to us by some passing traveler in some passing cafe in some passing country.

We experienced our first scheduled black-out in Kathmandu, due to insufficient electrical infrastructure. It was our introduction to Nepal and further along the road into India in general. It was pointed out to us the irony of the power situation given Nepal has abundant water resources - err from all the mountains and melting snow/ice, but cannot harness this energy into hydroelectricity. Sad but true.

Special note: in retrospect the public transport got progressively worse the closer we came towards India and further away from China. We were to fully realise this on the bus out of Nepal into India.... next
