Chad and I attended a conference on how the brain learns in Frankfurt, Germany this past April. Not only was the conference great, but the city was really cool too. W spent the day at our conference and then asked the hotel for a great place to eat dinner. He sent us to a truly authentic German restaurant. It looked like someone’s dining room in a small town of Iowa. They slid us into a large table with many other people. We sat down and placed our order. You will not be able to guess what Chad had to eat. Frankfurters, of course. He said they were quite tasty. I ordered boiled eggs in this basil/cream sauce. It was surprisingly good. It felt like we were at someone else’s Thanksgiving dinner or something. We had a great time!

The following day we went back to the conference and then headed into the city center. Although most of Frankfurt was bombed, they have rebuilt most of the city in traditional German flare. We looked for another traditional German restaurant and had good luck. When we walked in, the server yelled to another server upstairs to see if they had a table. The answer was no. Again, they found another table filled with people where we could slide in and join. As we were looking for something to eat-we watched mounds and mounds of sausages, wieners, and hunks of meat go by. We found it to be quite humorous. Chad ordered some wieners and I ordered sauerkraut and mashed potatoes-the meals were delicious. We spent some time walking around the city, looking for a beer hall. Instead, we found a huge hall/restaurant the serves apple wine-but no beer. We tried it. It was very similar to the ghlue-wein from our trip to the Christmas markets in Cologne, Germany.

We enjoyed Frankfurt very much. Although we spent much time at our conference, it was a great weekend excursion for us and we had a fabulous time sampling the local fare and checking out the sights.
