Possum Park Caravans & Motels
From More than 100 Days on the road in Miles, Australia on Mar 03 '08
Our run down from Rockhampton was good. We left at 10am and arrived in Theodore in time to meet Joan & Ted (Helens Aunt & Uncle) at the Grain Silos for lunch. Thank you Joan & Ted, the sandwiches were lovely and kept us awake till we got to Possum Park. Now Possum park during World War 2 was a explosives store. It was called RAAF Kowguran Sub Depot to No.3 Central Reserve Explosive Store and is located 20 kilometers north of Miles on the Leichhardt Highway. It comprised 20 concrete underground bunkers and 25 timber accommodation and administration buildings. The RAAF had 60 airmen and officers stationed there looking after 2500 tons of bombs and ammunition. In 1957 the RAAF decommissioned the site and it was sold off to private enterprise who have converted it into a modern self contained motel units and underground tea rooms and site office and on the surface a caravan park. The new owners renamed Kowguran to Possum Park. Part of the WW2 infrustructure was a rail line to Brisbane and although this line is no longer in use, the section that goes through the site has been retained and some of the old camp wagons and the station has been restored. In the morning we walked the three and a half kilometer track to look at all the bunkers.
