We decided to leave Napier today, and head down towards Wellington.  We have stopped over in some town called Levin.  I cant say that the town's on the way have impressed me too much, it is all very rural and small-town type of feel to the place.  Some areas look run-down, which is the first time I have seen this in New Zealand.  Despite this the vergeways seem tidy and dont see much grafitti.  Just some of the houses look a bit forlorn.

Kids have been great today, though we do seem to be moving from one park to the next to keep Matthew happy.  Lloyd seems more settled, and is definitely happier in his cot.  All kids asleep by 9pm which wasnt bad as we didnt arrive until about 8pm.

Napier - less touristy than the Bay of Plenty, but more real

We havent taken any photos today, though have seen some dramatic scenery.  We dont stop to take photos as we would have if we didnt have kids, as dont want to wake them up.  It is a shame, but one of the pitfuls of travelling with 2 youngsters.  We also have to press on when we can, as Lloyd only goes a maximum of 3 hours between feeds during the day, so the clock is always ticking.

Finally got an internet connection today, seems like ages since my last one.  We are heading to Wellington tomorrow probably, then will book a ferry and make for the south island on thursday or friday.  I cant wait to get to the south island now, have been hearing lots of good reports on the campsites and scenery.

Napier was a lovely town, I really enjoyed it there.  Less touristy than the Bay of Plenty, but more real. I could live in Napier I think.  But again you could see that the work options would be quite limited. The New Zealanders were quieter too, but still acknowledged us more than would have happened in england.  Fundamentally New Zealanders seem to be friendly down-to-earth family people.  They are quick to offer advice and suggestions on places to visit.

Hello, We are family of four (children ages 2 and 4) and I am planning a 2 1/2 week vacation to New Zealand. We are debating about a motorhome or car and just using the campgrounds? I am worried about the small space and sleeping in the Motorhome? We have traveled around the world several times with our kids but never used a motorhome. Did you use the motorhome for daily excursions even when staying in the same campsite for several nights? Thanks for your help!

Hi Karen. Sounds like you're in winding down mode. I do remember spending all day doing menial tasks when I drove around Australia, just cooking dinner takes all night. I think you'll come to appreciate the simplicity of it soon. Lloyd looks so grown up. We miss you already! Safe travels and we'll keep reading so keep writing.

Family travelers - Hi, good to see other people aren't scared of travelling with young children! We used the motorhome whenever we went out and about - some people tow cars but they tend to own the motorhome. It is an enclosed space, though if the weather is okay the kids spend a lot of time outside. We did'nt find the small space a major issue, though our children were younger than yours at the time. The convenience of a motorhome is that you dont have to keep re-packing, plus if the kids get fed up you can just stop anywhere and have all facilities (i.e. toilets, food!) to hand. The big downside is that you can't travel very fast, so if you want to see a lot of NZ maybe a car is better. NZ is very tourist and motorhome friendly so you wont have any major issues with parking/roads/etc. We have said that travelling NZ was fine in a motorhome, though when we went to the states we found it quite hard work - probably because of the distances involved and the size of the motorhome compared to the one in NZ. So it really does depend on how far you are planning to travel, and how comfortable you are driving a larger vehicle. The other concern for us was where the children sat whilst travelling, we managed to get both ours in the front, I wouldn't have fancied it if they had been in the back - as most motorhomes are. And looking at the seat harnesses provided they didnt seem too secure to me - I wonder how they would have coped in a crash. Even in the front it wasnt a great place for them to be. Some motorhomes also put the harnesses so you are sitting side on - which I read wasnt a good idea in a crash situation. Worth thinking about. Hope this helps. Hope you have a great holiday - I'm highly envious!!
