Out for the Day
From My Study Abroad in England in Saltaire, United Kingdom on Jan 12 '08
Before Christmas break I signed up for this program called the Home Link Scheme. It links international students with a local family or couple to meet up with about once a month. Before break I went with Suzy and Kolly and a girl, Bobo from Hong Kong for the day. They took us that day to Skipton, and we wandered around the market there. After they took us into a pub for a good Sunday dinner.
Then they took us back to their home and shared stories about their children and about what they do. It was fun to get to meet people who have grown up in the area. It's a totally different perspective then university students.
Today we met up once again before the semester is over and Bobo goes back to Hong Kong. First we drove out to Haworth. If anyone is an avid Bronte sisters fan, then you might recognize the name. It's the town where the Bronte sisters lived. It was really quaint. We were going to go into the little museum, but unfortunately it was closed. We wandered around the street and the graveyard and had a peek out at the moor. It started to rain so we decided to go some where else.
Neither us us had been to Saltaire before either so we drove over to that town next. It wasn't a long drive, it's just on the outskirts of Bradford. Here we ate lunch at a little pub right on the river. It was nice, a place I would never have thought to go into on my own. I ordered the Beef with a Yorkshire pudding. It was really good. The town itself is very interesting. It was all designed, built and settled by a name named Sir Titus Salt. He opened a mill here. But instead of using the local wool he imported alpaca wool to be processed, spun and woven. Like i mentioned before he completely built the city. He built schools, churches, the mill, homes, everything that his workers could need. Expect a pub, he didn't want his workers drinking. Everything else was provided. The town is now a World Heritage Site. Today the mill have been revamped and is home to a collection of David Hockney's artwork. I liked the fact that the old mill has found a new use. He's an artist who was born and raised in Bradford, but now is based in sunny sunny California. I don't know that I necessarily like his paintings, but he's done some really cool composite photographs.
