Great Keppel Island
From Great Keppel Island in Great Keppel Island, Australia on Oct 15 '07
Great Keppel is a pretty small Island just off Rockhampton (where I stayed the night before - dont ever go there) with some lovely beaches and not a lot else! I staed in a small hostel set in the bush with only a few guests staying there and I had a room to myself for the first night which was a rare treat. it was so relaxed here and layed in hammocks reading and walked to the beaches. one walk ended up taking far longer than i imagined it would and was really steep thorugh the bush and walking boots prob better that flippies for this - especially with a fratured toe which still hurts! but the reward was totally worth it - i got to this secluded little beach called monkey beach and i was the only one there. I stayed there until the sun started to go down and listened to my music (thanks mat) and got such an overwhelming feeling of euphoria that I danced and hopped around the beach and span around and around and splashed in the sea - i must have looked hilarious! there were some boats parked out to sea but if there was people on them they would have seen me and this just made me even more histerical! it was like a birst of happiness as i had been feeling a bit pants after saying goodbye to friends, being ill and staying in rubbish places. from that moment i felt better. i hiked back to civilisation, got myself a nice cold beer and layed in a hammock overlooking the ocean and watched the sunset - the most beautiful sunset i have ever seen in my life.
i tried to go snorkelling a couple times here but i really freaked myself out when i got too far out because there has been 2 shark attacks recently in not so deel water so i got really scared both times and swam back like a demented dog or something escaping a danger that really didnt exist. its wierd as when i was diving and there was a shark i wasnt scared at all but i think its because this time i was on my own.
on my first night back at the hostel a possum came and jumped on my lap - so cute! and there were massive lizards everywhere called guanas and parrots and stuff. it was proper ozzie and no roudy tourists! yipee!
