Shitty night - nice day
From 26 days in Costa Rica in Cahuita, Costa Rica on Aug 22 '07
Originally we wanted to stay one day in Puerto Limon (the biggest city in the Caribean coast) But when we told Andres (a guy working at Miss Junnie's) his face changed and he pretty much told us we are crazy and we shouldn't go there. And he is from Puerto Limon. Well we still wanted to see it, but we changed our plan from a day to few hours. As always locals know what they are talking about. We got of the boat from Tortuguero in Moin and the cab drivers attacted us and noone could belive we wanted to go to P. Limon. They all wanted to take us to Cahuita or P. Viejo. But we got one guy to drop us at the bus station in P.Limon. Cheked on the bus and went for a walk. Puerto Limon is a big port city the population is almost entirely black. And english is spoken pretty often. The girls are drop dead gorgeous. Basically it doesn't look or feel anything like the rest of costa rica. But it's also really dirty, busy, run down, and as everyone said very not secure (tourists are not advised to leave the hotels after dark. What are 'lovely' place... Had some really bad lunch in a Caribean restarant owned by Chinese people. I was sure we gonna get sick, but we didn't. After 3.5 hours of hungin' out I was really glad Andres told us not to stay. We got on a bus and left for Cahuita.
According to Lonely Planet. Cahuita is amazing. I don't know about that. The town is TINY with mostly cheap hotels. We were not carefull enough in choosing a place. The 'how bad it can be' attidute is very dangerous on this coast. It can be very bad. despite the perfect ocean front location with hamoks and palms, the room was stinky because of unproper pluming, dirty, and full of bags that were biting me all night. So I almost did't sleep at all. And at some point I opened my eyes and saw a guy bent towards our window looking inside the room with something in his hand. Now, the window is just a mosquito net, there are shatters but we opened them, as it was stinky and hot. So I looked at him for a while to see what he was going to do, and then snapped my fingers at him. He disapeared right away, but it kinda freaked me out. I moved all our stuff away from the window. But I didn't sleep for the rest of the night. When Russ had a shower the room filled up with smoke, and it's lucky that he didn't get electrified.
Originally we wanted to spend 2 days in Cahuita, but in light of our living situation we wanted to get the hell out ASAP.
So we went out for pretty good breakfast, packed our stuff and went for a walk in the National Park. The park starts right near the town and it is amaizingly stunning. The Jungle comes right to the beach and the beach is white and the sea is blue, but not some blue, the blue from the traveling magazins. No other sea I saw is as blue as Caribean. It's really cool.
Saw howling monkeys really close, a familly with a little baby. I almost stepped on a snake (I don't think venomous). Then we saw 2 sloths right near the trail. They are such cool interesting animals and so cute like little plush toys, but with huge clows. The clows are like nives. I guess it's their only protection. Tbhen met some Capuchin Monkeys that were obviosly fed by people before. One jumped on the tree so close to my face we could touch noses. And when I reached for the bag, for extra battaries, all 3 of them jumped at my feet with their hands out begging. I told them 'no' and they understood pretty quick ans hoped away. At the exit saw a talking parrot saying 'hola' to amazed tourists. Probably belonged to one of the park workers.
