White as far as the eye can see
From Whirlwind Trip of Europe in Bergen, Norway on Apr 26 '07
Thankfully our other train was slightly delayed and we made. So, Bern and I found a seat and tried to curl up for the over night. I managed to sleep for awhile until I woke up freezing cold, so on with the layers. Outside you could see the fog covering the lakes and everything for that matter. It was gorgeous with the sunshine tryingy to peak out from the horizon and we know it would be another gorgeous day.
We pulled into Oslo station at about 6:30am and found some needed food and tickets to Bergen. Yes, another train pretty much back to back. Ahhh but the difference with this train ride is that it has been voted the most beautiful train ride in the world. (Oslo to Bergen)
Starting out in the forest with lakes and small streams was a great way to feel ahome. It looks a lot like the Fraser Lake area, but across the country. We slowly started climbing in elevation and the snow started to get deeper and deeper. Houses started to get covered up to their rooftops. The mountains were so crisp and white. Rolling hills that were covered so freshly. I just took in every moment of beautiful fresh white snow. We got up ot the highest elevation of some 1200 metres above sea level. Many people got off and were doing spring skiing. Others who had small parachutes and they used them to pull themselves around the mountain, now that looked like fun. We hopped off the train and Bern did not hesitate to grab a snow ball and throw it at me which made me laugh and if we didn't have to get back on the train I would have loved to made a real game of it. But on we go. Twisting and turning threw tunnels that protected us from avalanche areas and slowly making our decent to Bergen. We couldn't believe all the beautiful, lush areas once we got out of the snow. The waterfalls were gushing.
Once we got into Bergen at 4:30pm we found our hostel and relaxed. We ended up meeting brothers Matti, and their dad Yonni from Finland. They were extremely funny and we hit it off right away. We managed to meet a whole bunch of people. Jay from the states, Gunther from Germany, Christian a friend of the finnish guys and more. The hostel was a blast and we just sat around and chatted for hours around the kitchen tables.
Bern managed to find out that a band called Grade was playing in Bergen. The lead singer was the one from Big Sugar and Bern is related to him. So, we managed to get tickets to the show.
April 28th
We headed out to the famous fish market and found a great place to eat pancakes. We put some sour cream and amazing strawberry jam on them and walked down the street enjoying every bite. Once we got to the tourist office we had the best help in the world. Olaf was amazing and got us a great deal on the Norway in a Nutshell tour!! We were exstatic.
Mt. Ulriken was only 5 minutes by bus where we took a tram car up to the top. It was a breathtaking view of the whole harbor and all of the dotted islands that ran along the coast of Norway. We went for a little hike around the top and were shocked to see how many poeple were jogging. The rocks were jagged and not very good to walk on even.
I guess it had rained for the last 88 days and we got here for the best weather ever. I don't know where we got this luck from but we are loving it. The cute row houses that are a famous site in Bergen were great to see from across the harbour. Each painted a different color lining the harbour.
later on we got ready to go out to the Grady concert for the start to my birthday!!!!!!!!!!! So, we got all dressed up and were off to the concert with Jay and Gunther.
