Cinque Terre – A UNESCO World Heritage Site

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, an agency of the UN and it was created in 1946 to promote world peace by focusing on areas of culture and communication, education, natural sciences, and social and human sciences. Cinque Terre means “five lands,” and it is a region of five villages in Italy. It was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

Cinque Terre has rugged mountain terrain, with drystone walls holding up terraces of vineyards. Some of them were made over a thousand years ago, but were abandoned because people wanted to move to the cities. To restore the Cinque Terre landscape, the Cinque Terre National Park has begun organizing work camps to rebuild the crumbling walls, restore trails and promote organic cultivation. I think that Cinque Terre was been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List because people have learned to work together to take care of this place.

During our visit to Cinque Terre we got a three day pass to go on the train and do some extreme hiking between the five villages. The paths were very narrow with a big drop off on one side. It was lots of fun but sometimes it could be quite intense. After the hike we had a nice cool dip at the beach and swam in the Mediterranean Sea. Even though there wasn’t much to do in Cinque Terre besides hiking, swimming, and eating, it is still quite beautiful and I would love to come back.
