The Paulistas

The paulistas, is the term given to the the people of the state of Sao Paulo. We arrived at the Guarulhus airport on the 4th at 9:00 am. After a bus ride we arrived at downtown Campinas where Diego (Andre´s cousin) picked us up and took us to Barao Geraldo, where they live. Upon arrival we were greeted by the lovely Dona Justa (Andre´s grandma) who was very excited to see us. Also waiting for us, was the best feijoada (black beans cooked with meat) ever! After stuffing ourselves with delicious food, we went on a little tour of the surrounding area. We visited GPP (the best research company in Brazil, owned by the family). It is such an awesome place to work at with it´s beautiful garden, pool, and unique architecture. Later that evening we went to the movies; we simply could not resist. It was really neat because we actually went to watch Spider Man 3 in the largest mall in Latin America (Shopping D. Pedro).

In the morning we woke to the lovely sounds of dogs and roosters greeting the sun! We later realized that the greeting went on 24 hours a day! Paulo has a gorgeous house with a heated pool (yes heated, in Brazil), and if that wasn´t enough he owns a place called a chacara (a house equipped for playing games, having parties, swimming in the pool and having lots of fun). We went to the Chacara to have a Brazilian BBQ and spend the day along side the pool helping Paulinha (Paulo´s daughter) make a water rocket out of a bottle! That night we went out to eat at a local bar across the street from the house with Paulo and Joao (Paulo´s son). We tried some local beer and ate Calabreza with Catupiri(Brazilian version of a pepperoni with cheese).

Hey, the most important part of traveling is trying new foods along with ice cream!!

Sunday, we took a bus and metro with Diego and his girlfriend (Cris) to downtown Sao Paulo. There, we did a lot of walking and had a great time exploring the city. We came across an amazing scene where it seemed as though the people had taken over the city and were celebrating by dancing to extremely loud techno music. We were in luck because it was a city sponsored cultural day and all of the cities major attractions were free. Sao Paulo felt like a historical place filled with gorgeous buildings, churches, and plazas. At the same time, it felt like it was a city in decadence because of the lack of care and respect for what it has to offer.

The following day we visited UNICAMP, the university where Diego goes to school and where Paulo is a professor of statistics. We spent the day there observing and talking with the students. We exchanged lots of information on the differences and similarities between our and their university system. We were a bit envious of the unity that we observed between the students. When ever there is a bit of time they get together and just hang out. The friendships are strong and it feels like a wonderful place to be.

We left Diego at school and walked home on our own. We passed by this little hut that sold pastel (like a turnover with cheese) and caldo de cana (sugar cane juice) and decided to indulge! A few steps later, we stopped for homemade ice cream. Hey, the most important part of traveling is trying new foods along with ice cream!! For dinner Paulo took us to the far far away place that he considered to be the best food in all of Campinas. He was correct, we still salivate with the thought of eating there! Paulo went out of his way to be an amazing host; we enjoyed his humor and crazy stories and are looking forward to seeing him again. We cannot forget to give thanks to the armadillo who made an appearance on the way to the restaurant in the middle of a very dark street! Wow, at first we thought it was a gigantic rat....when we realized that a rat couldn´t possibly be that big we figured out it was actually an armadillo!

On our last full day in Sao Paulo, Diego drove us to Sao Carlos (2 hrs. NE of Campinas) to visit Joao and his university. The campus was breath taking, filled with trees, bamboo, and even a lake. We came back home to pack and be ready for a next day departure from the house at 5:15am.

Before ending this blog, we must thank Diego for dedicating so much time to us. Diego, thanks for being such a great person! We´ll see you and Cris on the coast!

Ok, so we are now in the city of Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. We will probably be here until Wednesday, May 16th. Mita (Andre´s aunt) has taken us in and is spoiling the heck out of us! We´ll be telling you all about our excursions in Manaus next time. Same time, same channel! "Os Paulistas"

"Paulistas" é como chamam as pessoas do estado de São Paulo. Nós chegamos no aeroporto de Guarulhos no dia 4 às 9 da manhã. Depois de uma viagem de ônibus, nós chegamos no centro de Campinas onde Diego (primo de André) nos buscou e levou para Barão Geraldo, onde eles moram. Logo na chegada, fomos cumprimentados pela adorável Dona Justa (avó de André), que estava alegre por nos ver. Também esperando por nós estava a melhor feijoada de todas! Depois de nos empanturrar com uma comida deliciosa, fizemos um pequeno tour pelo local. Visitamos a GPP (a melhor empresa de pesquisa do Brasil). É um ótimo lugar para se trabalhar com seus belos jardins, piscina e arquitetura única. Mais tarde fomos ao cinema; não conseguimos resistir. Foi muito bom, pois fomos assistir Homem Aranha 3 no maior shopping da América Latina (Shopping Dom Pedro).

Pela manhã, acordamos com o agradável som de cães e galos dando boas vindas ao Sol! Depois vimos que as boas vindas duravam 24 horas por dia! Paulo tem uma casa maravilhosa com piscina aquecida (sim, aquecida no Brasil), e como se isso não bastasse, ele tem uma chacara (uma casa equipada para jogar, fazer festas, nadar e se divertir muito). Nós fomos na Chacara para comer um churrasco brasileiro e passaar o dia na piscina ajudando Paulinha (filha de Paulo) a fazer um foguete de água com uma garrafa! Nessa noite fomos comer fora em um bar na frente de casa com Paulo e João (filho de Paulo). Nós provamos algumas cervejas e comemos Pizza de Calabresa com Catupiry (versão brasileira do Pepperoni com queijo).

No domingo pegamos um ônibus e o metrô com Diego e sua namorada (Cris) para o centro de São Paulo. Lá nós andamos muito e nos divertimos explorando a cidade. Nós passamos por uma cena espantosa onde parecia que as pessoas tinham tomado conta da cidade e estavam celebrando dançando músicas techno extemamente alta. Nós tivemos sorte, porque era um dia cultural patrocinado pela cidade e todas as maiores atrações da cidade estavam de graça. São Paulo parecia um lugar histórico cheio de edifícios maravilhosos, igrejas e praças. Ao mesmo tempo, parecia que era uma cidade em decadência por causa da falta de cuidado e respeito pelo que ela pode oferecer.

No dia seguinte nós visitamos a UNICAMP, a universidade onde Diego estuda e Paulo é professor de estatística. Passamos o dia lá, observando e conversando com os estudantes. Nós trocamos muitas informações sobre as diferenças e similaridades entre o nosso sistema universitário e o deles. Nós ficamos com um pouco de inveja da unidade que observamos entre os estudantes. Sempre que eles têm um tempo livre, eles se juntam só para conversar. As amizades são fortes e parece um ótimo lugar de se estar.

Deixamos Diego na universidade e fomos andando para casa sozinhos. Passamos por uma pequena tenda que vendia pastel e caldo de cana e decidimos aproveitar! Poucos passos depois, paramos para tomar um sorvete caseiro. Ei, a parte mais importante de viajar é experimentar novas comidas junto com sorvete!! No jantar Paulo nos levou num lugar bem longe, que ele considera a melhor comida de Campinas. Ele está certo, nós ainda salivamos só de pensar na comida de lá! Paulo se mostrou um ótimo anfitrião; nós apreciamos seu humor e suas estórias malucas e mal podemos esperar para vê-lo novamente. Não podemos esquecer de agradecer ao tatu que apareceu no caminho do restaurante, no meio da rua escura! Uau, no início pensamos que era um rato gigante... quando percebemos que um rato não podia ser tão grande, nós descobrimos que era um tatu!

No último dia inteiro em São Paulo, Diego nos levou para São Carlos (2 horas de Campinas) para visitar João e sua universidade. O campus é de tirar o fôlego, cheio de árvores, bambus e até um lago. Voltamos pra casa pra arrumar as malas e nos aprontar para sair no dia seguinte às 5:15 da manhã.

Antes de terminar esse blog, nós temos que agradecer a Diego, por dedicar tanto tempo com a gente. Diego, obrigado por ser essa pessoa maravilhosa! Nos vemos (você e Cris) no litoral!

Ok, agora estamos na cidade de Manaus, a capital do estado do Amazonas. Nós provavelmente vamos ficar aqui até a quarta, 16 de maio. Mita (tia de André) nos recebeu e está nos mimando muito!
