We choose Nha Trang as our beach stop in Vietnam, due its easier transport connections and snorkeling.  Once we got there we wished we had tried a bit harder to get to the more beautiful Mui Ne beach further south, as the swimming at Nha Trang isn't great and the beach front has not been developed very well - in many cases there is barbed wire between restaurants and the sand!  On the plus side there is great seafood, we spent one night trying many things off an outside markets menus, including fresh 1/2 doz scallops for less than $NZ2 yum! And some frog which wasn't so nice.

I went on a 4 island snorkeling tour, wondering what I had got myself into when the tour guide introduced the tour by saying there will be kareoke and dancing at lunch time, and the opportunity to get (expletive, expletive)-faced on fruit wine.  Snorkeling wasn't a big focus of the tour, especially as half the boat were Vietnamese women who did not go swimming at all due to their desire to have white skin.  However, the snorkeling I did do was pretty good, especially at the place we stopped for lunch at while everyone else was singing!  I did have a good time on the tour all things said though.

Our last day on the beach before our dreaded night bus to Hoi An was spent lying on rented beach chairs trying to avoid catching the eye of the many people selling stuff up and down the beach, and laughing at the little Vietnamese boys gaping at the topless sunbathers - not something you should be doing in these conservative parts!
