We left our overnight Cancun hotel at 4am (ugh!) to catch the 7am flight to the USA  - Alberquerque via Dallas. By the time we get to Alberquerque and pick up and load our rental car, it is about 2.30pm and we are very tired. We drop by Grandmas Music at Alberquerque so Michael can pay the deposit and order his Gibson Songwriter guitar...a long held dream he has been seriously investigating for the past 2 months via the internet. Grandmas is a music institution...a huge barn like space with an amazing array of musical instruments and as luck would have it, the best prices in the US. Prying him out of there is difficult, but we have a long drive ahead of us.

A typical New Mexican view...from our car.

Alberquerque is New Mexico's biggest city and it looks really good. Lots of adobe architecture and we run into snow on the side of the road within minutes of leaving the airport precinct.

fantastic restaurant - El Brunos - a walk down the road. The food is amazing....New Mexico's version of Mexican food...and very impressive

We had a rough plan to get to Durango today, so our drive tomorrow to Telluride would only be about 3 hours. However tiredness soon sets in and we decide to find a town on the way to spend the night. The best option turns out to be Cuba, and it is a real delight although a travelling saleman at the hotel wonders what 4 Aussies are doing in a place like this.

Our motel (at the end of the town, heading to Colorado) is nice and warm and there is a fantastic restaurant -  El Brunos - a walk down the road. The food is amazing....New Mexico's version of Mexican food...and very impressive. Having survived on airport offerings for breakfast and pretzels in the American Airlines lounge for lunch, we are famished. So a good pig out is in order!

The boys are thrilled as Cuba has been getting snowfalls every weekend for the past 4 weeks (apparently very unusual), so there is plenty of snow around the motel. They delight in throwing and stomping in the snow.

The next morning we head across the road to a cafe (think every stereotype of the American old style diner) where the options are not as appealing. I make the mistake of ordering Weet with Cream (what was I thinking) whilst the males do a lot better by ordering eggs, french toast and pancakes.

We wish we had more time to explore the area around Cuba...it looks really interesting. Maybe another trip sometime!
