Strange day in Montevideo
From Going it alone - Santiago to Rio in Montevideo, Uruguay on Nov 27 '04
28th Nov - My first real travelling mis-hap and all my fault. Missed my bus due to the time difference in Uruguay. Its usually on the same time as Arg - however I wasn't aware that Arg was still on daylight saving, and Uru had gone off a few days before. Got put on a non-direct local bus to Montivedeo - took 2 hours extra but didn't mind as they were good to put me on the next bus for free. Spent the rest of the day wandering around Montevideo - an unusual place I thought - not a huge city, kinda run down, and lots of people just milling about the place - staring at you as you walked passed. But at the same time it didn't feel dangerous. And there were some lovely tree lined avenues with old colonial buildings which reminded me of the nicer parts of Barcelona. A strange place.
29th Nov- Was going to spend the morning shopping for soveniers in Monte (as the shops were all shut yesterday on Sunday) but slept in and had to go straight to the ferry port. 3 hour slow ferry trip back to BA. HOT day in BA - like real sweatty armpits weather. Decided not to give the Milhouse any more of my money since they didn't refund my cab fare. Found another cheap (but old) hotel in the city. $12 and had my own room and cable TV, and balcomy overlooking BA city streets - shared (dirty) bathroom, but didn't mind. Was nice to have my own room. Spent the evening wandering around BA - felt completely safe.
30th Nov - Got up way too early - had to fly out of Aeroparque - had no idea how long to get there and checkin. Took just 10 mins in the cab and checked in straight away - I was waiting at the terminal gate at 9am - flight didn't leave till 11. 2 hours flight to the Arg side of the Iguazu falls - could see the mist of the falls as we were landing - quite awesome. The airport seemed like just a litte strip in the middle of the jungle. Caught the shuttle bus into the small laid back town of Puerto Iguassu. Decided not to visit the falls today - just wandered the town (not much to see) and exchanged some money. Stayed at the HI youth hostel - clean but nothing special.
