We arrived in Chengdu at 5.30 in the morning and after a shower we headed out to see the pandas. The reason for the early start is that essentially pandas sleep most of the time and are only really active in the early morning.

They were unbearably (forgive pun, sorry) cute. Sitting down, eating bamboo; rolling over, play fighting; lying down, eating bamboo; shuffling off to get more bamboo that sort of thing. We fell in love with them, grown men were going awwh, at every little movement they made and that was before we saw the baby one asleep in a tree.

The rest of the afternoon we went on a search for malaria tablets again (no luck) and went to see about extending our visa.

We visited Wenshu monastery which was interesting, the buildings are all piled on top of one another and it has a nice courtyard with a teahouse and a very good vegetarian restaurant, so we ate well.

The following day we headed by bus to Kangding.
