From London to Aberdeen
From From Toronto to London in Aberdeen, United Kingdom on May 31 '06

So I arrived late Thursday night after a LONG 12 hour bus trip. I guess I can say I now have seen the whole east coast of the UK. It all looked the same out of the bus window -- rolling green hills with lots of sheep. It actually is very beautiful. On the way up I met a guy on the bus who basically told me the whole history of Aberdeen. So, from what I could understand from his thick Scottish accent, Aberdeen is known for its oil rigs of the coast and granite. Apparently most of the buildings in the city are made of granite, due to an old quarry that was here before. I would compare Aberdeen to the size of London, Ontario back home. There are about 250,000 people here, most of which are working on the oil offshore. There are alot of Canadians and Dutch here.

My first impression of Aberdeen is that it is very different from London, the people here are WAY more friendlier and approachable. Let me say that they can drink here like no other people I have ever met. Most people are drunk by 11pm and are stumbling down the main street. (I can't even explain to you how much they drink, and they drink fast.) There are alot of differences here, for instances they do not 'chill' at a friend's home. They have their 'local' pub that they go to after work and that is where you meet up with people. Also this is where they watch their football games and hang out. Very strange to me and I can't get use to it, plus I don't know how they can afford to go out almost every night and drink. Warning!!! ahead for any religious people who might be reading this. On friday night we went to a bar. It was like no other bar I've ever been to, but it was a church that was converted into a bar. It seems kind of blasphemous or sacrilegious to be drinking in a church, but it's a new thing in Aberdeen where they convert churches into clubs. Plus, I got incredibly wasted that night. As I mentioned before they drink sooooo fast here and I was trying to keep up and show them that Canadian girls can drink, but I'm a light weight. Sorry guys, I tried my best, but I can't keep up to the Scottish way of drinking.

As for the whole 'job/working' thing, I'm still working on that. I think I'm going to relax and chill for a bit. I have a few leads for jobs, but nothing yet. I'll keep you posted on that.
Also, they have a huge Canada Day event in London, where they shut down the streets and celebrate Canada Day. I will be there for sure. They are expecting approximately 3000 people to be there, and it's a 2 day celebration. I can't wait. Also, I plan on going to Dublin for the weekend because you can get cheap flights out and stay for a few days.

I'm trying to find out a way to add pictures, but most internet cafes here don't have a USB port, but I will keep on trying.
Hope you all are enjoying the nice weather back home. It's very cold here. The warmest it will get in summer is 23 degrees. I'll keep you all posted on new events in Aberdeen.
