Rotorua 2008 (pop. 55,100)

Rotorua is bekannt fuer seine geothermischen Aktivitaeten. Es gibt zahlreiche Geysire und heisse Schlammbecken in der Stadt.

1. Woche____17. - 24. April 2008

1 Tage Regen ... 2 Tage warm... 5 Tage sonnig

Ich bin angekommen; bei Sarah, Chris, Jack und Taiga. Sie haben mir ihr kleines Haeuschen im Garten gegeben. Dort drinnen befindet sich ein Hochbett mit einem Doppel unten und einem Einzel oben. Ich benutze das untere mit der zu weichen Matratze als Kleiderschrankersatz und habe es mir oben gemuetlich gemacht. Ausserdem ist in der Huette Chris' Tattoo-Studio, was er so nebenbei noch macht.

Meine erste Woche bestand darin den ganzen organisatorischen Kram zu erledigen, wie Eroeffnung eines Bankkontos, Beantragung meiner Steuernummer und mich darum zu kuemmern, das mir mein noch zustehendes Geld von Australiens Regierung zugeschickt wird, was allerdings noch seine Zeit braucht. Dann musste ich auch schon an einen Job denken. Wie gut dass Sarah einen Computer hat. Mit den beiden Kindern habe ich mich auch sehr schnell angefreundet.

Das beste, was in der ersten Woche passiert ist, dass sich endlich ein Kaeufer fuer mein Auto, welches noch in Rocky steht, gefunden hat. Dank Johno, der sich um alles gekummert hat, habe ich auch bald 2.293 neuseelandische Dollar bekommen. 1 Euro sind 50 NZ Cents.

Am Dienstag, 22.4. bin ich mit Sarah, Jack und Taiga nach Tauranga und Mt. Manganui, etwa eine Stunde von hier an der Ostkeuste. Dort gab es einen deutschen Schlachter, Jamm, lecker.

Da ich immer schlimmere Rueckenschmerzen bekam, bin ich dann am Mittwoch zum Chiropraktiker und habe mich wieder einrenken lassen, und das war auch schon meine erste Woche.

Ich habe endlich mal wieder ein Bad genommen. Das letzte Mal war etwa vor einem halbem Jahr in Dingo. Sonst haben wir Chris' Eltern besucht; seine Schwester und sein Bruder waren auch gerade zu Besuch aus Auckland. Dienstag haben wir mit ein paar Freunden von Sarah und Chris Jack's vierten Geburtstag gefeiert. Am Mittwoch bin ich dann zum Chiropraktiker, weil ich immer staerkere Rueckenschmerzen bekam und das wars auch schon fuer die zweite Woche.

3. Woche____1. - 7. Mai 2008

Am Donnerstag bin ich mit Sarah und den Kindern in den Redwoods (Rotwaeldern) spazieren gewesen. Als Sarah dann am Freitag fuer Jack's Geburtstagsparty eingekauft hat, war ich mit Jack beim Ponyreiten und auf dem Spielplatz. Die Party mit seinen Freunden war dann am Samstag. Ausser meine erste von zwei Sitzungen beim Zahnarzt, immernoch derselbe Zahn, dass ich etliche Bewerbungen geschrieben habe und mir warme Klamotten zulegen musste, Sarah hat fuer mich auch ihren Kleiderschrank mal ausgemistet, ist nicht viel mehr passiert.

4. Woche____8. - 14. Mai 2008

2 Tage Regen ... 1 Tag kuehl... 5 Tage sonnig

In dieser Woche gab mir Sarah einen Arschtritt; ich solle, wenn ich wirklich einen Job wolle, nicht Truebsal blasen, sondern losgehen und ueberall in den Laeden direkt nach nen Job fragen. Das habe ich auch dann gemacht, allerdings ohne ersichtlichen Erfolg. Ich war in etlichen Shops,  Cafes, Bars und Restaurants.

Dann habe ich auch entschieden, ich muesse flexibler sein; Sarah braucht ihr Auto und mit dem Fahrrad ist es, wenn es regnet, auch etwas ungemuethlich. Also aufs gings zu 'Rangis", das ist ein Platz, wo jeder sein Gefaehrt zum Verkauf abstellen kann. Dort habe ich auch direkt einen guenstigen Wagen gefunden. Nach einer Probefahrt gehoerte es mir schon so gut wie. Fuer $ 1.100 habe ich einen 20 Jahre alten, hellblauen, 1,5 ltr, manuelen (was hier eine Seltenheit ist) Mitsubishi Lancer bekommen. Es hat all moeglichen Schnickschnack was sonst nur neuere Autos haben, wie z. B. hoehenverstellbaren Sitz und Lenkrad oder elektrische Seitenspiegel. Radio mit CD-Player gabs auch dazu. Fuer den Preis ein recht gutes Auto.

Ein weiterer Versuch einen Job zu bekommen, war saemtliche Hotels, Motels und Backpackers anzuschreiben. Das "Planet Nomad Backpackers" hat sich auch schnell verzweifelt gemeldet, dass sie einen Nacht- und Wochenend-Manager braeuchten.

Die naechsten Tage war ich dann auch da und hab alles ueber Ein- und Ausschecken, Touren und Attraktionen gelernt. Und schon wieder eine Woche um.

5. Woche____15. - 21. Mai 2008

1 Tag Regen ... 2 Tage kalt... 7 Tage sonnig

Mein Auto hat nach nur zweimal fahren schon seinen Geist kurzfristig aufgegeben und ist nicht mehr angesprungen. Klang so das die Batterie leer war, aber Ueberbruecken hat auch nicht geholfen. Ein Autoelektriker hat's dann repariert. Die Batterie war tatsaechlich leer, war einfach nie richtig aufgeladen. Und das Ueberbruecken hatte nicht funktioniert, weil ich die Ueberbrueckungskabel zuerst falsch angeschlossen hatte und dann die Sicherung durchbebrannt ist, ich doofi. Naja, es war dunkel. Mein Auto fuhr wieder wie ne eins, nur leider ohne Musik, keine Ahnung was damit los ist, der Elektriker konnte es auch nicht sagen.

Am Samstag wollten Chris und Sarah auf ne Geburtstagsfeier, also habe ich mich als Babysitter angeboten und genau an diesem Tag haben die Kinder auch wirklich geschlafen; nicht wie sonst, wo sie immer wieder aufgewacht sind und geschrien haben.

Am Sonntag wo ich eigentlich ins Hostel einziehen sollte, wurde mir dann ploetzlich mit wilden Gruenden eine Absage mitgeteilt. Sie wollten es alles so lassen wie ist es, braeuchten doch niemanden, wollten kein Maedel da nachts alleine lassen und und und. Also weiter gings mit der Jobssuche.

Am Dienstag hatte ich dann ein Gespraech in einem Cafe, wo es nur Take Away Kaffees und Kleinigkeiten zum Essen gibt. In diesem Laden war ich als allererstens vor zwei Wochen.

Am Mittwoch wurde mir gleich von dem Kaffeehersteller gezeigt wie man den besten Kaffee macht. In Australien und Neuseeland ist das Kaffeemachen etwas komplizierter. In Deutschland drueckt man meistens nur auf nen Knopf, hier mahlt man den Kaffee, tut ihn fuer jeden Kaffee einzelt in die Maschine und schaeumt die Milch mit Dampf. Mir schmeckt mein Cappuchino und den Gaesten auch.

6. Woche____22. - 28. Mai 2008

1 Tag warm... 1 Tag kuehl... 7 Tage sonnig

Am Samstag - natuerlich an meinem Geburtstag - hatte ich meinen ersten Arbeitstag bei 'XPRESSO', einem kleinen Coffee Shop. Mir wurde alles gezeigt, damit ich am Montag dann den Laden alleine schmeissen kann. Wir machen saemtliche Arten von Kaffee auch Eis-Kaffee, verkaufen Pies (sprich: Peis - herzhafte Blaetterteigkuchen) und Kekse, die wir aufbacken und bei uns gibt es Sandwiche und Paninis (getoastete Brote). Nach der Arbeit konnte ich dann endlich meine Geschenke von meiner Familie auspacken, welche schon bei Sarah eingetroffen sind, als ich immer noch in Australien war. Sarahs Plan war mir etwas aus Deutschland mitzubringen. Abends kamen Sheryl & Kendal (Freunde von Sarah), und wir haben Raclette gegessen. Spaeter gabs noch einen leckeren Kaesekuchen vom 'Cheesecake Shop' [Judith kennst du die noch?].

Den Rest der Woche habe ich noch nach nem Geschenk fuer Sarah geschaut, die Alte wird ja nun auch endlich mal 30, ich war arbeiten, bei meinem hoffentlich letztem Zahnarzttermin fuer diesem spezifischen Zahn, habe Baby gesittet, als Sarah krank im Bett lag, bin mit Sarah und Taiga nach Hamilton gefahren, da Sarah mit ihrem Visum nicht wieder hier einreisen darf und hatte ein Vorstellungsgespraech bei 'KATHMANDU', einem Outdoor-Laden.

Dann passierte dann doch etwas sehr Negatives. Am Mittwoch brach Chris sich das Bein, als er mit Jack beim Skate-Park war; genau einen Tag bevor sie in Urlaub nach Deutschland fliegen wollten. Chris sass auf seinem Rad, stand auf einem Huegel und ist dann so bloede geschlittert, dass er sich das Bein unterhalb des Knies und am Knoechel gebrochen hatte. Zwei Jungs waren ihm Gottseidank zur Hilfe. Chris hat sich auch noch selber einen Krankenwagen rufen koennen. Nun hiess es erstmal schnell die Fluege umbuchen, bevor sie die bezaehlten Tickets verlieren. Was fuer ne Woche.

Es wird kaelter, der Winteranfang war am 1. Juni. Brrrrrrrr...

Am Freitag habe ich Chris im Krankenhaus besucht, war noch nicht ganz bei Sache wegen der vielen Schmerzmittel.

Samstag habe ich alleine im XPRESSO gearbeitet; zur Zeit mache ich samstags alleine, montags hilft mir Margaret – eine nette Studentin –, fuer ein paar Stunden und donnerstags mache ich nur ein paar Stunden. Nach der Arbeit bin ich nochmal zu Chris, um ihn ein paar DVDs zu bringen; man sah schon, dass es ihm besser geht.

Am Sonntag ist Sarahs 30. Geburtstag, daher waren wir am Samstag mit ein paar Freunden von ihr beim Thailaender zum Essen.

Dienstag bin ich zum Mt. Ruhapehu, etwa 2,5 Stunden von hier - dem groessten Skigebiet hier in Neuseeland - gefahren, um nach nem Job zu suchen. Hatte zwar ein paar Vorstellungsgespraeche, hat sich aber nix ergeben. Trotzdem war es ein netter Ausflug; gut mal rauszukommen und mal wieder in einem Hostel abzuhaengen. Habe auch mal wieder einen 40minuetigen Walk gemacht, endlich mal wieder sportlich betaetigen. Wurde auch Zeit.

8. Woche____5. – 11. Juni 2008

Diese Woche hatte ich meinen ersten Arbeitstag bei Kathmandu am Dienstag. Fuer 3 Stunden an 3 Tagen wurden uns die Besonderheiten der Schuhe, Fleecejacken, Schlafsaecke, Rucksaecke, Klamotten und Zelte beigebracht. War sehr lustig; an einem Tag mussten wir Zelte auf- und abbauen. Ansonsten mache ich immer noch viel Kaffee bei XPRESSO.

4 Tage kuehl ... 4 Tage sonnig

Man sieht es wird kaelter. Da meine Kollegin Margaret von XPRESSO krank ist, arbeite ich noch mehr. Diese Woche habe ich jeden Tag geschuftet. Am Dienstag war ich sogar so fleissig, dass ich erst Kaffee gemacht habe, dann zu Kathmandu gehuscht bin, um danach noch weiter Kaffee zu machen. Nun, ich will ja schliesslich im Sommer nur reisen und irgednwo muss das Geld ja herkommn, also ist meine Mission gerade: arbeiten so viel es geht.

Am Sonntag kam dann noch Job Nummer drei dazu. Ich arbeite jeden Sonntag im "Crash Palace Backpackers" von 7:30 h bis 20 h; ich sitze an der Rezeption, checke ein und aus, beantworte saemtliche Fragen, buche Touren, mache die Betten, wasche Waesche und putze das gesamte Hostel. Kann je nachdem wieviele kommen und gehen 5 - 10 Stunden sein, bis ich machen kann was ich will. Eigentlich kann ich den ganzen Tag machen was ich will, muss halt nur die Arbeit irgendwann gemacht werden. Fuer den einen Tag Arbeit kann ich dann hier umsonst in einem Doppelzimmer mit TV wohnen. Drausen gibt es sogar einen Whirpool, den ich fast jeden Tag auch benutze. Eigentlich dachte ich, ich ziehe erst bei Sarah aus, wenn sie von ihrem 2monatigen Deutschlandurlaub zurueck ist, aber das Angebot musste ich einfach annehmen.

Am Dienstag war ich mit Chris im Kino, wir haben "You don't mess up with the Zohan" gesehen; total daemmlicher Film, aber ich mag solche Filme.

10. Woche____19. – 25. Juni 2008

2 Tage kalt ...  5 Tage Regen

Diese Woche ist nicht wirklich was Aufregendes passiert. Ich habe sechs Tage gearbeitet und bin am Freitag bei Sarah aus - und ins Hostel eingezogen. In der ersten Woche habe ich 'Raeumchen wechsele dich' gespielt, da mein Zimmer erst gestrichen und dann ein neuer Teppich verlegt wurde. Im Hostel werden gerade saemtliche Renovierungsarbeiten gemacht, da die Manager Toni und Chris das Hostel im September kaufen wollen. Es war vor nicht allzu langer Zeit etwas  herruntergekommen; ist auch ein ziemlich altes Gebaeude (fuer Neuseeland).

11. Woche____26. Juni – 2. Juli 2008

2 Tage sonnig ...  4 Tage Regen

Dieses Wochenende sind Sarah & Chris nach Deutschland geflogen, daher hatten wir am Freitag ein Abschiedsessen bei ihren Schwiegereltern. Ansonsten - ganz unspannend - habe ich fuenf Tage bei drei Jobs gearbeitet.

Am Dienstag war ich mit Kolleginnen von 'Kathmandu' im Kino, das erste Mal, dass ich mit Kollegen weg war. "Kung Fu Panda" war sehr lustig.

Diese Woche sechs Tage Arbeit, drei Jobs. Am Sonntag war es so kalt, in Rotorua gab es - wie ich gehoert habe - das erste Mal nach 13 Jahren Schnee auf'n Berg. Der Winter ist definitiv angekommen. Am Tag ist es immernoch recht warm, es reicht eine duenne Jacke, aber lass erst mal die Sonne untergehen - brrrrrrrrr. *froestel*

2 Tage sonnig ... 1 Tag Regen

Endlich hatte ich mal zwei Tage am Stueck. So habe ich den ersten zum Nichtstun genutzt und den zweiten, um einen 3-stuendigen Spaziergang in den Redwoods-Waeldern zu machen. Es war herrlich, sonnig und trotzdem teilweise kuehl. Ich war nur am Jacke aus- und wieder anziehen. Es ging auf den Berg rauf mit Aussicht auf den See Rotorua und die Stadt, teilweise war sogar Eis auf dem Weg.

Am Mittwoch hatte ich dann noch zwei freie Tag hintereinander. Chris, der Hostel-Manager hat gefragt, ob ich nicht Rafting machen moechte. Natuerlich will ich. Ich muss die Sachen, die ich hier verkaufe, ja auch schliesslich getestet haben. Das ist das Positive, wenn man im Hostel arbeitet, man bekommt Aktraktionen umsonst. Das Rafting in Rotorua hat Schwierigkeitsgrad 5, der hoechste, den man machen kann, wenn man kein Professioneller ist. Etwa eine Stunde waren wir auf dem "Kaituna"-Fluss. Es gab etwa drei 1 - 2 meter hohe Wasserfaelle und einen 7 meter hohen. Es war ueberhaupt nicht kalt wie ich dachte, die Wassertemperatur war aehnlich der Aussentemperatur, etwa 12 grad. Nach dem Wasserfall haette ich mal lieber Mund und Nase schliessen sollen. Das Wasser schwappte nur so uber uns. Ab und an fallen auch mal Leute aus dem Boot oder die Botte ueberschlagen sich, wir sind heil unten angekommen. Super Erlebnis.

14. Woche____17. - 23. Juli 2008

2 Tage bewoelkt... 5 Tage Regen

Am Donnerstag habe ich dann eine zusaetzliche Abendschicht im Hostel uebernommen.

Am Freitag sind wir mit meinen Kollegen von Kathmandu zum Bowling. Wir haben damit Blair, den stellvertretenden Geschaeftsfuehrer verabschiedet. Ich war gar nicht sooo schlecht. Habe einmal den vierten und dann den dritten Platz belegt. Naja, wir waren nur sechs, aber immerhin. Nach der sportlichen Aktivitaet, mussten wir uns dann wieder ein paar Kalorien reinschaufeln, also auf zum Essen fassen bei McDonalds.

Am Montag war mein freier Tag, da bin ich mit Cherryl aus Bremerhaven nach Wai-O-Tapu (bedeutet: Heiliges Wasser) gefahren, das ist das groesste aktive Vulkangebiet in Neuseeland. Das gesamte Gebiet ist übersät mit kollabierten Kratern, heißen und kalten Seen, Schlammtümpeln und dampfenden Fumarolen (Dampfaustrittsstellen). Besonders bemerkenswert sind die farbigen Ausfällungen von Mineralien, die das Gebiet als gelbe (Schwefel), orange (Stibnit und Realgar), weiße (Siliciumdioxid), grüne (Orpiment), purpurne (Permanganat), rot und braune (Eisenoxid und -oxidhydroxid) sowie schwarze (Schwefel und Kohlenstoff) Farbtupfer einzigartig machen.

Auf dem Rueckweg sind wir noch am groessten Schlamm-Pool vorbei und sind in einem Bach baden gewesen. Von einer Seite kommt heisses Wasser und von der anderen kalten. Wir haben uns noch von oben bis unten mit weisser vulkanischen Asche eingerieben, soll gut fuer die Haut sein. Langsam fange ich an meine freien Tage zu nutzen.

Diese Woche war mal wieder ganz unspannend. Sechs Tage arbeiten und am Mittwoch ins Kino. Und schon ist wieder ne Woche um.

16. Woche____31. Juli - 6. August 2008

1,5 Tage sonnig ... 5 Tage Regen

Juhu, ich habe mal wieder eine nette Backpackerin gefunden mit der ich einiges unternehmen kann; diesmal mit Claudia aus England. Die ersten vier Tage wurde erstmal wieder gearbeitet, um dann die letzten drei Tage nur Fun zu haben.

Unser erste Anlaufpunkt war 'Waimangu Volcanic Valley'. Wieder ein aktives Vulkangebiet; nicht ganz so farbenfroh wie 'Wai-O-Tapu', aber nicht uninteressant. Danach haben wir einen kurzen Walk zu einem Krater gemacht. Den Rest des Abends haben wir mit Adrian (auch aus England) und einer Flasche Wein im Whirpool verbracht.

Am Dienstag nach der Arbeit ging meine Touri-Tour mit Claudia weiter. Wir sind zum "Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park" (sozusagen ein Zoo) und hinterher ins Kino - mal was neues.

Am Mittwoch habe ich eine Jet Boat Tour (ein superschnelles Boot) mit dem "NZ Riverjet" gemacht; die Einladung habe ich zwei Wochen zuvor bekommen, als eine Frau im Hostel vorbeikam und mir ihre Tour vorgestellt hat. War wie erwartet super. Wir sind zu einem der tausend Vulkangebiete 'gejettet'. Diesmal war es 'Orakei Korako'. Auf dem Rueckweg wurde dann alles aus dem Jet Boat rausgeholt und wir haben etliche 360 grad Drehungen gemacht. Das Jet Boat wurde uebrigens in Neuseeland erfunden.

Danach habe ich mich wieder mit Claudia getroffen und wir sind zu den 'Skyline Skyrides'. Dort faehrt man mit ner Gondel hoch und mit den sogenannten 'Luges' wieder runter. Das ist eine Art Sommerbobbahn, wie es sie auch in Bayern gibt, nur dass man auf den Asphalt faehrt. Das hat maechtig Spass gebracht. Hinterher sind wir mit Adrian zu einem asiatischen Restaurant zum Essen. Wenn ich diese Woche mal nicht fleissig war.

17. Woche____ 7. - 13. August 2008

5 Tage sonnig ... 3 Tage Regen ... 2 Tage kalt

Das Motto dieser Woche war eher Arbeit; was mir aber auch viel Spass bringt. Am Donnerstag habe ich erstmal meine Haarlaenge reduziert; ging mir sowas von auf die Nerven. Montag war ich mit Kollegen im Kino - gehe ich zu oft ins Kino? Dienstag war der Tag, wo ich mir mal eine Massage gegoennt habe und Mittwoch und Donnerstag die, wo Inventurtage bei Kathmandu waren. Zunaechst sind wir in aller Hergottsfruehe (Fruehaufstehen sollte abgeschafft werden) nach Tauranga gefahren. Man koennte die Strecke in einer Stunde fahren; koennte - wenn man sich nicht staendig verfahren wuerde. (Anm. d. Red.: Ich bin nicht gefahren). Nach 6,5 Stunden Zaehlen und Scannen von Tausenden von Produkten haben wir das gleiche Verfahren fuer den Rest des Abends im Lager von Rotorua angewannt. Langer Tag, der aber auch viel Spass gebracht hat.

Am Donnerstag haben wir die gleiche Inventur im Laden in Rotorua durchgefuehrt. Dafuer kamen uns die Mitarbeiter aus Tauranga auch zur Hilfe. Hat auch den ganzen Tag in Anspruch genommen. Den Rest der Woche war ich jeden Tag arbeiten. Wird mal Zeit, dass das Wetter besser wird und ich hier raus komme.

3 Tage sonnig ... 5 Tage Regen ... 4 Tage warm

Am Freitag waren wir mit beinahe dem kompletten Kathmandu-Team und auch Ehemaligen im 'Pig & Whistle', ein Pub der am Wochenende auch Live Musik macht. Kann mich gar nicht mehr daran erinnern, wann ich das letzte Mal tanzen war. Am Dienstag habe ich dann auch nach langer Zeit mich mal wieder in die Natur gewagt, um diesmal den 'Tokorangi Pa Track' in den Redwoods zu wandern. Zwei Stunden und 45 Minuten bin ich bei meist schoenem Wetter - wenn mal man von den Regenguessen absieht - den Berg rauf, durch den Wald und den Berg wieder runter gelaufen.

Sarah und Familie ist seit Dienstag wieder im Lande; am Mittwoch bin ich dann mal auf einen Sprung vorbei. Die vier hatten schoene 8 Wochen in Deutschland verbracht. Da irgendwie das Hostel am Mittwoch ziemlich leer war und die Backpackerin Nicole ziemlich einsam war, bin ich mit ihr nach der Arbeit im Hostel in die Lava Bar auf ein paar Drinks.

20. Woche_____28. August - 3 September 2008

4 Tage sonnig ... 3 Tage Regen ... 2 Tage warm

An meinen drei freien Tagen bin ich am Freitag dann nochmal mit ein paar Backpackern in die Lava Bar und am Samstag mit meiner Kollegin Morgan zum Abendessen in das 'Imperial', da war ich ja schon einmal, aber am Wochenende gibst da leckeres Buffet. Hatte auch nen 2 fuer 1 Gutschein, der ja genutzt werden will.

Montag war mal wieder Kinotag mit Kollegen und am Mittwoch habe ich Sarah und Familie zum Mittagessen ins Hostel eingeladen, die hatten meine Bleibe ja auch noch nicht gesehen.

Was habe ich denn diese Woche so erlebt? Ach ja, Arbeit, Arbeit und Arbeit. 7 Tage, 6 Jobs. Oh, ja am Dienstag habe ich mir dann wieder die Haare kuerzen lassen, da der Frisoer meine Haare so verunstaltet hat, dass sie nur auf komplizierende Art zu frisieren sind. Diesmal bin ich mit Toni zu ihrer Schwaegerin, die doch professioneller war.

22. Woche_____11. - 17 September 2008

5 Tage sonnig ... 0 Tage Regen

Diese Woche war mal etwas spannender. Hab viel erlebt. Am Freitag war ich mit Kathmandu Kollegen bei meinem erstem Rugby Spiel. Auckland gegen die Bay of Plenty 'Steamers' (welches die Region hier ist). War knapp, aber wir haben doch leider verloren. Hab ueberhaupt nicht verstanden, was da ablief, aber war klasse.

Am Samstag bin ich diesmal mit Sarah ins 'Imperial' zum Buffetessen. Am Sonntag hat sie mich dann mit ihren Kids besucht waehrend ich im Hostel gearbeitet habe.

Zeit fuer mal wieder ein Touri zu sein, daher bin ich mit zwei englischen Backpackern zu 'Te Puia' - Maori Kultur- und Geothermales Besucherzentrum. Habe bisher noch nix hier gemacht, was nicht super war. Waren bestimmt an die 5 Stunden bei 'Te Puia' ; ich hatte ein Mitarbeitertreffen bei Kathmandu, ansonsten waere ich noch laenger geblieben. Beim Meeting knurrte mein Magen, da kam Sarah's Einladung zum Abendessen wie gerufen.

Am Dienstag gings dann endlich zum Whakapapa Skigebiet auf dem Mt. Ruapehu mit meiner Kollegin Jackie von Kathmandu. Das letzte Mal war etwa vor 3,5 - 4 Jahren in Oesterreich, daher dachte ich eine Unterrichtsstunde waere angebracht und das war sie auch. Hinterher war ich ziemlich sicher mit Kurvenfahren. Nun weiss ich auch wie es wirklich geht. Wuerde gerne nochmal gehen und meine Kuenste an den steileren Abhaengen probieren. Das einzig Negative war, das wir gar nicht an Sonnencreme gedacht hatten. Vor allen Dingen in Neuseeland wo die Sonne extrem aggressiv ist. Das Ergebnis und womit ich fuer ne Woche leben musste, ist auf dem Foto zu sehen.

Am Donnerstag ging es gleich weiter; ich bin mit Sarah nach Hamilton zum Konzert der "Black Seeds" (die Kiwi-Band war uebrigens im Juli in Hamburg). Dort haben wir uns mit ihrer Freundin Nina getroffen; bei der wir auch uebernachtet haben. Klasse Musik; hoert man hier im Hostel auch taeglich druch die Lautsprecher. Ausser Arbeit bin ich mit Sarah am Dienstag noch ins Kino.

5 Tage sonnig ... 1 Tag Regen ... 2 Tage warm

Diese Woche habe ich sechs Tage gearbeitet und am Freitag kam Sarah mit der ganzen Familie und wir sind hier in den Whirpool gehuepft. Am Sonntag habe ich dann total die Zeitumstellung verpasst, so dass ich erst ne Stunde spaeter an der Rezeption zum arbeiten war. Gluecklicherweise hat mich aber keiner vermisst.

Seit Mittwoch, dem 1. Oktober sind Chris und Toni nun offizielle Besitzer des Crash Palace Backpackers. Daher gab's ein Barbeque fuer alle.

25. Woche_____2. - 8. Oktober 2008

3 Tage Regen ... 3 Tage kalt

Am Freitag ist bei Kathmandu fuer 2,5 Wochen wieder ein Ausverkauf, daher hiess es viel viel Arbeit, was meinem Portemonnaie sehr gefiel. Seit Chris und Toni Besitzer sind, muessen sie auch sparsamer sein, deswegen werde ich im Hostel in naechster Zeit so gut wie gar nicht arbeiten; ausser natuerlich den Sonntag fuer die freie Unterkunft. Aber ist ja auch okay. Ich habe diese Woche eh 6 Tage bei Kathmandu gearbeitet.

1 Tag sonnig ... 3 Tage Regen ... 3 Tage bewoelkt

An meinen freiem Tag am Donnerstag kam Sarah mit den Kindern vorbei und wir habne ein Picknick auf meinem Bett veranstaltet.

Mittwoch hatte ich einen weiteren freien Tag; da habe ich mal zwei Reisebueros abgeklappert und mich nach Fluegen nach Asien und ja auch weiter nach Deutschland erkundigt.

1 Tag sonnig ... 3 Tage Regen ... 3 Tage bewoelkt Montag war mal wider ein Kinotag; diesmal mit Chris und meiner Ex-Kollegin Eliza und am Mittwoch kam Sarah mit Tochter Taiga wieder vorbei. Nach einem weiterem Besuch im Reisebuero bin ich mit meinem Kollegem Richard zum deutschen 'Beerfest'. Gab lecker Bratwurst und Brezel.

 Tag sonnig ...  Tage Regen ...  Tage bewoelkt

Samstag war ich dann nochmal mit Anne und Sophie, den beiden deutschen Maedels, die auch hier im Hostel arbeiten, wieder auf dem Bierfest. Diesmal habe ich mir Spaetzle gegoennt. Im Reisebesuch war ich auch nochmal; gibt viel zu organisieren und Preise zu vergleichen. Ich habe einen Flug gefunden, der nach Hamburg geht mit einem Stopover in Asien, wobei ich in ein Land von Neuseeland einfliegen kann und aus einem anderem Land raus nach Deutschland. Ich weiss nur noch nicht wohin ich in Asien will.

Dienstag war ich mit meiner Kollegin Jackie wieder Snowboardfahren. Ich konnte sie ueberreden ihre Skier im Auto zu lassen und auf's Snowboard umzusteigen. Sie war viel besser, als sie mir weiss machen wollte. Wir waren diesmal auf der anderen Seite vom Mount Ruapehu im Turoa Skiegebiet. Es ist das einzige in Neuseeland, was noch offen ist. Ich werde immer besser und besser.

Diese Woche war mal wieder so ganz unspannend. Ich habe nur am Donnerstag Baby gesittet bei Sarah als sie zum Essen ausgegangen ist, habe 6 Tage gearbeitet und habe an meinem freien Tag am Dienstag ueberhaupt nix gemacht.

An meinem freiem Freitag waren mal wieder Reisebueros angesagt. Ich habe mich immernoch nicht entschieden, welchen Flug ich nehme und sie finden auch immer neue Angebote.

Am Samstag war mal endlich wieder ein Tag fuer Unternehmungen; ich hatte frei und am Sonntag verlaesst uns die Sophie, also sind wir zuerst nach Rainbow Mountain (Regenbogengebirge) und sind dort auf den Gipfel gestiegen; hat uns etwa eine Stunde gekostet. Danach haben wir uns es im 'Waikite Valley Thermal Pools" gutgehen lassen. Das heisse, sehr mineralhaltige Wasser kommt dort direkt aus dem Boden.

Zum Abendessen war ich dann mal wieder bei Sarah, wo sie mir eine nette Massage verpasst hat. Danke Sarah, das war herrlich.

Am Dienstag habe ich dann endlich meinen Flug gebucht. Ich fliege am 16. April mit Cathey Pacific Airline (eine TOP 10 Airline aus Hongkong) von Christchurch auf der Suedinsel nach Hongkong. Das ist bisher sicher, alles andere an Daten und Orten kann ich noch aendern. Nach drei bis vier Tagen Aufenthalt in Hongkong fliege ich weiter nach Tokio. Von dort aus mache ich meinen eigenen Weg nach Singapur. Werde wohl irgendwann Oktober/November wieder zuhause sein. Waeren dann knapp vier Jahre; kommt mir gar nicht solange vor.

An dem ersten meiner zwei freien Tage haben mich Sarah und die Kids besucht, am anderen habe ich mal wieder nix gemacht. Freitag war der erste Tag wo es nun ein woechentliches freies Barbeque im Hostel gibt. Die naechsten Tage wurde ich auch dauernd bekocht, wie praktisch.

32. Woche_____20. - 26. November 2008

5 Tage sonnig ... 1 Tag Regen ... 1 Tag bewoelkt Am Donnerstag hatte Chris Geburtstag; war dann zum Abendessen bei ihm und Sarah. Am Wochenende war dann die Hochzeit von Chris' Bruder Simon in Auckland; Sarah fragte, ob ich nicht mitkommen wuerde, um waehrend der Feier auf die Kinder aufzupassen. Klar, dachte ich, gut mal aus Rotorua rauszukommen.

Am Freitag - auch der Tag an dem Taiga ein Jahr alt wurde - Abend gabs vietnamesisches Take Away zum Essen im Appartment-Hotel, wo Sarah sich eingenistet hat. Ich habe bei Shelly (Chris' Schwester) gepennt.

Samstag vormittag, als alle bei den Hochzeitsvorbereitungen waren, bin ich derweil mit der Faehre nach Devonport. Von Auckland selber habe ich ja schon genug gesehen. Dort bin ich ein paar Stunden umhergewandert, bis ich dann wieder zurueck im Hotel war (diesmal ein anderes). Alle waren bereits fast fertig fuer die Hochzeit von Simon und Jolee.

Waehrend der Zeremonie habe ich draussen auf Taiga aufgepasst. Drinnen haette sie die doch eher die Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen mit Gequaengel. War halt mued.

Nach der Heirat bin ich dann mit den Kindern im Appartment geblieben. Die waren ganz easy. Ich habe nen Film geguckt und das war auch schon mein Tag. War irgendwie hundemuede. Zwei Tage nicht arbeiten war ich halt nicht gewohnt.

Bevor wir am Sonntag zurueckfuhren, haben wir uns noch Fruehstueck in einem nettem Cafe gegoennt.

Da ich fuer Auckland den Sonntag nicht im Hostel gearbeitet habe, haben wir ausgemacht, dass ich immer dann ein paar Stunden arbeite, wenn sie mich brauchen.

Am Montag habe ich dann wieder bei Kathmandu gearbeitet. Unglaublich, aber jeder Tag der Arbeit bringt mir immernoch Spass. Abends war ich dann mal wieder Kino mit Kollegen angesagt. "Rock 'n' Rolla war - naja.

Mir fiel das siedentheiss ein, dass die Registrierung von meinem Auto abgelaufen ist. Der TUEV uebrigends auch, ups. Die Pruefstelle offenbarte mir dann, dass ich Reparaturen im Wert von $350 - 400 benoertige. Wieder Geld, was ich nicht habe oder vielmehr nicht ausgeben moechte.

33. Woche_____27. November - 03. Dezember 2008

7 Tage sonnig Am 1. Dezember war hier Sommeranfang, man sieht es auch. Wir hatten etwa drei Tage richtig heisses Wetter; musste da natuerlich arbeiten; abends dann auch noch im Hostel. Freitag war wieder unser woechentliches gratis Barbeque im Hostel.

Dienstag und Mittwoch hatte ich mal wieder frei, wo ich mal wieder faul war. Wird ja auch mal wieder Zeit. Abends war ich mit Lena und Tony, meinen beiden neuen Zimmergenossinnen, und der Tine in ner Bar. Ich bin von meinem luxorioesem Doppelzimmer nun in einem 6-Bett-Zimmer gezogen, da das Hostel immer voller wird und sie nun alle Doppelzimmer benoetigen. Unser Zimmer ist nun das Arbeiterzimmer. Meine Begeisterung hielt sich am Anfang in Grenzen.

6 Tage sonnig ... 1 Tag Regen Diese Woche war absolut nix spektakulaeres. Wir Maedels haben Drinkspiele in unserem Zimmer veranstaltet; sollte man nur nicht zu ausgedehnt machen, wenn man am naechsten tag frueh raus zum Arbeiten muss. hehe

35. Woche_____11. - 17. Dezember 2008

6 Tage sonnig ... 3 Tage Regen ... 3 Tage bewoelkt Hallo, liebe Freunde und Familie zuhause; es ist vollbracht, ich habe meinen Flug nach Deutschland gebucht und vollstaendig bezahlt.

Meine Flugdaten:

10. November:    Singapur - Hongkong

12. November:    Hongkong - London

14. November:    London - Hamburg

Eine lange Reise steht mir also noch bevor. Die Daten lassen sich nach Lust und Laune noch veraendern, muss ich vielelicht auch noch, wenn mir vorzeiig das Geld ausgeht. Wie ich von Tokio nach Singapur (nur schlappe 5313 km) werde ich dann spontan entscheiden. Auch in welche Laender ich dann besuchen werde. Auf dem Plan stehen: Korea, China, Vietnam, Laos, Kambotscha, Thailand, Nepal evtl. Indien und Malaysia.

Am Montag haben Tony, Lena und ich uns ins Zeug gelegt und fuer Chris und Toni ein richtiges Nord-/ Sueddeutsches Gericht gekocht. Unsere Spaetzle, Kaesespaetzle, gemischtes Gemuese und Frikadellen waren heiss begehrt bei den beiden.

Seit neuestem gibt es in der Lava Bar jeden Dienstag gratis Pizza, klar das ich das auch wann immer es geht mitnehme.

36. Woche_____18. - 24. Dezember 2008

4 Tage sonnig ... 1 Tag Regen ... 2 Tage bewoelkt In Lena und Tony haben Sarah und ich endlich jemanden gefunden, mit dem man "die Siedler von Catan" spielen kann - ein Brettspiel, wer es wagt es nicht zu kennen. Wir spielen es seit ueber 10 Jahren schon. Habe sogar gewonnen, hehe.

Wieder ein Heiligabend, das dritte schon ausserhalb Deutschlands. Weihnachtsstimmung kommt immernoch nicht auf hier, auch wenn Lena und Toni den ganzen Tag Weihnachstlieder getraellert haben. Die Maedels haben zwar das Hostel festlich geschmueckt und einen Weihnachtsbaum gibt es auch, aber das hilft auch nicht.

37. Woche_____25. - 31. Dezember 2008

3 Tage sonnig ...  1 Tag Regen ...  3 Tage bewoelkt Am 1. Weihnachtstag hatten alle frei, ist der einzige Feiertag hier. Als Weihnachtsessen hat Hostel-Chris ein Barbeque veranstaltet. das war aber mal lecker.  Gab Fleisch, Schinken, Salate mit allem drum und dran und sogar Nachttisch. Sarah war ueber die Feiertage derweil bei Familie, die weiter weg wohnt.

Weihnachtstage vorbei, Alltag wieder da. Ab an die Arbeit. Der 25. war mein einziger freier Tag diese Woche. Zu Sylvester bin ich mit Lena und Tony ins 'Grumpy Mole', eine Bar fuer die wir von Chris und Tony einen $50 Getraenkegutschein zu Weihnachten bekommen haben; zusammen mit ner Flasche Alkohol. Im Jahr 2009 sind wir dann in die Backpackers-Bar, die Lava-Bar. Das war also 2008 welches ich zu 3/4 in Rotorua verbracht habe und das restliche Viertel Australien umrundet habe.

1. Week_____17 - 23 April 2008

I arrived at Sarah, Chris, Jack and Taiga's house. They gave me their little hut in the backyard. Inside there is a bunk bed with a double at the bottom and a single on top. I use the double as a wardrobe because the mattress is far too soft and made myself comfortable at the top. In the hut there is also the tattoo studio from Chris. He is doing it every now and then.

My first week was to organize different stuff like open a bank account, apply for a tax number and try to get all the money the australian government still owes me. Unfortunately this will take heaps of time.

The best thing what happend this week is that somebody bought my car which is still in Rocky. Thank Johno that he helped me with that. I got  NZD 2,293. 1 AUS equals 1,23 NZD.

On tuesday, April 22 Sarah, Jack and Taiga took me to Tauranga and Mt. Manganui. It is about an hour from here at the east coast. There is a german butcher. Yammy.

My back pain went worse and worse so I had an appointment at the chriopractor on wednesday to get an adjustment and this was all what happend in my first week.

2. Week_____24 - 30 April 2008

I took a bath after 6 month. We visited Chris' parents; her sister and his brother came from Auckland. On tuesday we celebrate Jack's forth birthday with some friends of Sarah and Chris. On wednesday I had to go to the chiropractor cause of my worse getting back pain and that it for the week.

On thursday I went for a walk with Sarah and her kids to the Redwoods. On friday when Sarah bought stuff for Jack's birthday party I went with Jack to the playground and I let him ride on a pony. The party with Jack's friends was on saturday. Except my first appointment at the dentist, still the same tooth, and I wrote heaps of job application not much more happened. I also got some warm cloth, some of them from Sarah's wardrobe.

This week Sarah kicked my ass. I shouldn't sing the blues when I want a job. She persuade me that I should ask directly in the shops, cafes and restaurants for work. So I did it but without apparent luck.

I also decided that I have to be more flexible. Sarah needs her car and with a bike it could be a bit wet in the rain. So I have to have my own car. I went to "Rangis" that is a yard where everybody can leave their vehicle to sell it. There I found immediately a bargain.  After a test drive the car was almost mine. For $ 1.100 I bought a light blue 20 year old Mitsubishi Lancer. My car has all the bits and pieces what usually newer cars have like a height adjustable seats and steering wheel or electrical side mirrows. For that price a good deal.

Another attempt to get a job I sent emails to every type of accommodation. The "Planet Nomad Backpackers" wrote me immediatly a desperate answer. They were looking for a Night - and Weekend Manager. The next days I were there to learn everything about the hostel, tours and attractions. And again another week was over.

5. week_____8 - 14 May 2008

2 days rain ... 1 day cool ... 5 days sunny

After just two days of driving my car didn't want to start anymore. Seemed that the battery is empty but also jump start didn't work. An electrician had to fix it. The battery wasn't really full and with just short drives it was very quick empty again. The jump start didn't work because when I did it, I did it the wrong way so I burnt the fuse. Now it's working fine expect that the radio is not working. Dunno why.

On saturday Chris and Sarah wanted to go to a birthday party so I offered them to be the babysitter. Glad the kids were sleeping; they wake usually up every now and then and scream.

On sunday I was suppose to move in the hostel but they had unacceptable reasons that they do not need me anymore. They already have a backpacker who is working sometimes and they wanna keep him; they also said they do not want a girl sitting there alone and the guy said that is not the right job for me. He hasn't really seen me working. So I had to keep going with jobsearching.

On tuesday I had an interview in a little coffee shop where they only have take away drinks and snacks. That was the first shop where I asked for a job about two weeks ago. On wednesday I had my coffee making training from the coffee producer. I am making now a very yummy flat white which I like the most.

6. Week_____22 - 28 May 2008

1 day  warm... 1 day cool ... 7 days sunny

On saturday - of course on my birthday - I had my first day of work at 'XPRESSO' a little coffee shop. Everything was shown to me so I can do the shop alone on monday. We make any kind of coffee, also frappes, we sell Pie's and cookies, sandwiches and panini's and so on. After work I finally could open my presents from my family which was already send to Sarah when I was still in Australia. Sarah's plan was to bring me a present from Germany. In the evening Sheryl and Kendal, friends of Sarah came. We had a nice Raclette for dinner (cook lots of nice things in little pans in a grill on the table), yammy. Later I also got a passionfruit cheesecake from the 'Cheesecake Shop'.

The rest of the week I looked for a present for Sarah; finally the old witch will get 30. ;-) I had hopfully my last appointment at the dentist for this special tooth, I did babysitting when Sarah was sick in bed, drove with Sarah and Taiga to Hamilton because her returning visa expired and I had an interview at 'KATHMANDU, the outdoor shop.

Then something bad happend, Chris broke his leg on day before they were surpose to fly to Germany for holiday. He was with his son Jack at the skate park. We was on his bike and slipped so badly that he broke his leg under his knee and near his ankle. Fortunately two guys were there to help him. We was still able to call for an ambulance. Quickly they had to change their flights immidiately that they won't lose there tickets. What a week.

7. Week_____29 - 4 June 2008

It is getting colder. The beginning of winter was at the 1 June. *freeze*

On friday I visited Chris in the hospital, he was still out of sorts because of the pain killers.

Saturday I worked alone at XPRESSO. At this time I work alone on saturdays, margaret, a nice student, helps me for a few hours on mondays and on thursdays I just work for a few hours. After work I visited Chris again and brang him e few movies. I definetely looked better.

Sarah's birthday will be on sunday so we went with some friends of hers to a thai restaurant.

On tuesday I drove to Mt. Ruhapehu - about 2,5 hours from here; it is the largest ski area in New Zealand. I had some interwiews for a job there but no luck. It was great to get out of town and stay in a hostel. I also did a 40 minutes walk. It was time to do a bit of walking.

8. Week_____5 - 11 June 2008

On tuesday I had my first day at "Kathmandu". For 3 hours on 3 days we learned everything abouy shoes, fleece jackets, sleeping bags, backpacks, clothing and tents. Was cool. On one day we had to pitch up and strike some tents. Besides I made a lot of coffee at XPRESSO.

You see it is getting colder. My collegue Margaret was sick so I worked more at XPRESSO than usual. This week I didn't had a day off. Tuesday I was busy as a bee first I went to the coffee shop then to Kathmandu and then back to XPRESSO. Well, after all I wanna travel in summer and I don't get money from laying down. So my motto at the moment is: work as much if I can.

On sunday I got my third job. Every sunday I will work at the "Crash Palace Backpackers" from 7.30 am till 8 pm. I will do the reception, do the check-in and check-outs, aswer every question, book attractions and tours, do housekeeping, do the laundry and clean the whole hostel. It depends how many people check out but the cleaning and housekeeping could take from 4 till 10 hours. The rest I can do whatever I want. Well, I can do whatever I want the whole day, the work has just to be done. For the one day work I get my own double room with a TV and a DVD-Player. There is also a spa outside for everybody. I use it almost every day. I thought I will stay at Sarah's till she is back from two month holiday in Germany but then I got this offer so I had io do it now.

On tuesday I watched "You don't mess up with the Zoahn" in cinema with Chris; extremly wierd film but I love it.

10. Week_____19 - 25 June 2008

2 days cold ... 5 days rain

This week nothing really exciting happend. I worked six days and on friday I left Sarah's place and moved into the hostel. In the beginning I had to change the rooms a few times because first the room was painted and then I got a new carpet. They doing a lot of renovations here because the manager Toni and Chris want to buy the hostel in September and it was a little bit run down. It is an old building (for New Zealand).

11. Week_____26 June - 2 July 2008

2 days sunny ... 4 days rain

This weekend Srah and Chris flew to Germany that is why we had farewell dinner on friday at her in-laws place. Otherwise - not exciting - I worked five days in three jobs.

On tuesday I was in the cinema with collegues from 'Kathmandu' for the first time. "Kung Fu Panda" was a very funny animation movie.

This week I did six days of work also in three different jobs. On sunday it was so cold. This was the first time for 13 years - I heard so - there were snow on top of the mountains in Rotorua. The winter is here definitly. At daytime it is still quite warm. A thin jacket is sometimes enough to wear but after the sunset - it is freezing.

Eventually I had two days off in a row. So didn't do anything on the first day and on the second I did a 3 hour walk in the Redwood Forest. It was very lovely. It was sunny but also sometimes a bit cool. I always dressed and undressed my jacket. The track was up the hill where you can see to Lake Rotorua and the town. There were a few spots with ice on the track.

On wednesday I had another two days off. Chris the hostel manager ask me if I want to go rafting - of course I want. It is necessary to do all the things you have to sell it. That the good thing when you work in a hostel. The rafting in Rotorua is grade 5, the highest you can get as a beginner. It included several small waterfalls (1till 2 metres) and a big one which is 7 metre high. We were about an hour on the 'Kaituna'-River. It wasn't as cold as I expected. The water temperature doesn't drop much in winter. It was about 12 degrees; it was like the outside temperature. AThe thing I should have done was close my mouth and nose at the big waterfall. The water splashed all over us. Every now and then the raft flips over or just people fall in the water. We arrived savely on the bottom of the fall. Great adventure.

On thursday I did an extra evening shift at the hostel.

On friday we played bowling with my collegues from Kathmandu as a farewell for Blair the assistant manager. I wasn't tooo bad. I was once the third and then the forth. We were just six people but well... After that we had a great healthy diner at McDonalds. ;-)

On my day off on monday I drove with Cherryl from Germany to ''Wai-O-Tapu' (sacred water). It is an active geothermal area. It is an active geothermal area which has many hot springs noted for their colourful appearance. Visitors can walk at their own pace and absorb the unique features including the world famous champagne pool, geysers, bubbling mud, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations.

On our way back we went to the biggest mud pool and went for a swim in a creek. Hot water runs from the one side and cold from the other. We also rubbed ourselves with white volcanic ash. It is supose to be good for your skin.

I started to let no grass grow under my feet.

This week wasn't exciting at all. I worked six days and went to the cinema on wednesday. That was my week.

16. Week_____ 31 July - 6 August 2008

1.5 days sunny... 5 days rain

Hooray, I found another nice backpacker to do something with. This time it was Claudia from the UK. The first four days I just worked. So I can have fun the rest of this week.

We started with 'Wainmangu Volcanic Valley'. It is a hydro thermal system created as the direct result of the volcanic eruption of Mount Tarawera on 10 June 1886. Not as colourful as Wai-O-Tapu but not uninteresting. After that we did a short walk to a crater. The rest of the evening we spent our time in the spa with Adrian (also UK) and a bottle of wine.

On tuesday after work I drove with Claudia to the 'Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park' and after that we watch a film in the cinema - something new, ey?

On wednesday I had the change to do a Jet Boat tour with the 'NZ Riverjet'. I got an invitation two weeks agao when the lady was in the hostel to introduce me to her tour. Was great as expected. We went to one of the thousend volcanic areas. This time it was 'Orakei Korako' what means 'The Place of Adorning' and it is a highly active geothermal area most notable for its series of fault-stepped sinter terraces also known as “The Hidden Valley”. It is also the largest of its kind in New Zealand. On the way back it was the fun part. Lots of 360 degrees spin. By the way the jetboats were designed in New Zealand.

17. Week_____ 7 - 13 August 2008

5 days sunny... 3 days rain ... 2 days cold

The motto for this week was 'just work' but I love it. On thursday I cut my hair got sick of it. On monday I have been with collegues at the movies - do I go to the cinema too often? Tuesday I allow myself a massage and wednesday and thursday were the days where we had to do stocktake at Kathmandu. First of all we had to drive to Tauranga - too early if you ask me. You could do the distance in one hour - could - if you did not lose one's way all the time. (Editor's note: I did not drive). After 6.5 hours counting and scanning of thausands of products we did the same in the store in Rotorua for the rest of the day. It was a long day but also a fun day.

On thursday we did the same stocktake in Rotorua with some help from the Tauranga staff. Took us the whole day as well. I worked the rest of the week every day. Time for good weather so I can get out of here and do something.

On friday I went together with almost the whole Kathamndu team and also some ex-workmates to the 'Pig & Whistle', a pub with live music on the weekends. Can't even remember when I was out for dancing lastly. On tuesday I went back to the nature after a long time sitting in the hostel and doing absolutly nothing. This time I did the 'Tokorangi Pa Track' in the redwood forest. I walked for two hours and 45 minutes up and down the hills mostly at nice weather; there were just two rain showers.

Sarah and her family was back from their eight weeks holiday in Germany. On wednesday I visited them.

On wednesday the hostel was pretty empty; Nicole from Germany was quite lonely so I went to the Lava Bar for a few drinks with her.

On my three day offs on friday I went with some backpackers to the Lava Bar again and on saturday I had dinner with my collegue Morgan at the 'Imperial'. That was the asian restaurant were I was before. On the weekends they have a yammy buffet and I still had a 2 for 1 voucher.

Monday was cinema day with workmates and on wednesday I invited Sarah and her family for lunch in the hostel. They haven't seen my place back then.

What did I do this week? Oh yeah, I worked and worked and worked. 6 days and 7 jobs. On tuesday I cut my hair cause the last time the salon made it do complicated to style. So I went with Toni to her sister-in-law. She was way more professional.

This week I have done a bit more. Did a lot actually. On friday I was at my first rugby game with my workmates. Auckland vs. Bay of Plenty Steamers (that's the region here). Was close but we lost at the end. I had no idea what was going on on the field but is was a nice experience.

On saturday Sarah and I we went to the 'Imperial Restaurant' for an asian buffet and on sunday she visited me with her kids in the hostel while I was working.

It was time to do more tourist stuff. So I went with two english backpackers to 'Te Puia', the Maori Culture and Geothermal Experience. I didn't do anything in this region what I didn't liked so far. We were about five hours at 'Te Puia' and I wouldn't leave if I didn't had a staff meeting at Kathmandu. There my stomach began to rumble so Sarah's inviation for dinner came just in time.

On tuesday finally I went to the Whakapapa Skifields at Mt. Ruapehu to go snowboarding with my workmate Jackie. The last time it was about 3,5 till 4 years ago in Austria so I thought a lesson would be good and it was. After that I felt pretty save to do curves and know how to do it. The only bad thing was that we forgot to take sunsreen. Especially here in New Zealand were the sun is really aggressiv. The result and with what I had to live for a week you will see in the picture.

On thursday I went to the next mission - to the concert of the "Black Seeds" in Hamilton with Sarah. (By the way the Kiwi band was in Hamburg this Juli). In Hamilton we caught up with Sarahs friend Nina. We stayed at her place for the night. It was great fun. I love the music. Didn't know that is the same I am listing in the hostel all day. The rest of the week I just worked and on tuesday I went with Sarah to the cinema.

This week I worked six days. On friday Sarah came with her family and we jumped all in the spa. On sunday I totally forgot the daylight savings time so I was one hour to late at the reception to start work. Fortunately nobody missed me. Since the 1st October Toni and Chris are officially owners of the Crash Palace Backpackers. So they have done a BBQ for everybody.

On friday we had another sale at Kathmandu for 2,5 weeks. That meant a lot of work. My wallet likes it. Since Toni and Chris are owners of the hostel they have to look an eye on their money so I won't work much. Of course except on sundays for free accommodation. But it is alright cause I worked six days this week at Kathmandu.

On my day off on thursday Sarah came with her kids and we had a picnic on my bed. On wednesday I had another day off so I went to two travel agencies to check out some flights to Asia and then to Germany.

1 day sunny ... 3 days rain ... 3 days overcast On monday I went to the cinema; this time with Chris and my former colleague Eliza. On wednesday Sarah came with her daughter Taiga. After another visit at the travel agent I went with my colleague Richard to a german beerfest. Had a nice german bratwurst and a brezel.

28. Week_____ 23 - 29 October 2008

1 day sunny ...  days rain ...  days overcast On saturday I went to the german beerfest again with Anne and Sophie, the two german girls who work here in the hostel. This time I had some nice 'Spaetzle' (homemade egg pasta with bacon). I also went to the travel agent again. Had to organise and compare prices. I found a flight to Hamburg with a stopover in Asia. With this flight I can fly in in another country in Asia than I fly out. Still don't know where I gonna go in Asia.

On tuesday I was snowboarding again with my collegue Jackie. I had to talk into her that she leaves her skies in the car and take the snowboard. She was much better than she told she is. We went again to Mt. Ruapehu this time on the other side at Turoa Skifields. It is the only skifield in New Zealands which is still open. I am getting better and better.

This week was not very exciting. On Thursday I was babysitting at Sarah's while she was out for dinner. Otherwise I worked for six days and on my only day off on tuesday I did not do anything at all.

30. Week_____ 6 - 12 November 2008

3 days sunny ... 4 days overcast

On friday on my day off I went again to the travel agencies. I still do not know which flight I should take. They also find more and more offers.

Saturday was finally day for doing something. I had a day off and Sophie will leave on sunday so we went together to the Rainbow Mountain to ascend the summit. It took us about an hour. After that we drove to the 'Waikite Valley Thermal Pools'. It was very relaxing. For dinner I went to Sarah's place. We finished that day with a nice massage she gave me. Thanks mate, it was awesome.

On tuesday eventually I booked my flight. I will fly on 16th April with Cathey Pacific Airline from Christchurch (South Island) to Hongkong. Thats for sure but all other flight I can still change the date and country. I might stay there for three or four days before I will fly to Tokyo. From there I will make my own way to Singapore. That will be probably in a years time from now. All in total I will be away for almost 4 years. Does not seem so long.

On the first of my two day offs Sarah visit me with her kids and at the second I didn't do anything. This friday was the first day were we get a free BBQ in the hostel. This week I didn't cook often there was always somebody who cooked for me. Huray.

32. Week_____ 20 - 26 November 2008

5 days sunny ... 1 day rain ... 1 day overcast On thursday was Chris' birthday. I was there for dinner and on the weekend was the wedding from Chris' brother Simon in Auckland. Sarah asked me to come with them and take care of their kids while they are at the wedding. Sure, I thought good reason to come out of Rotorua.

On friday - Taiga 1. birthday - we had vietnamese take away for dinner in the apartment where Sarah and the kids stayed. I stayed at Shellys (Chris' sister) place. Saturday morning when everybody was busy with organising the wedding I took the ferry to Devonport. I have seen enough from Auckland. I was there for a few hours before I went back to the hotel (another one this time). Everyone was almost dressed for the wedding from Simon and Jolee.

During the reception I waited outside with Taiga. She was too loud for inside. She was just tired but did not want to sleep.

After the wedding I stayed in the apartment with the kids while everybody was celebrating. It was pretty easy. They fell asleep quite fast. I watched a movie and that was my day. Was tired too. Two days in a row without work makes me tired.

Before we drove back we had breakfast in a nice cafe.

Because I did not work this sunday in the hostel I will work every now and then for a few hours when they need me.

On monday I worked at Kathmandu. Unbelievable but still I enjoy working every single day. In the evening I went to the cinema with my collegues. "Rock 'n' Rolla' was ... well ... ok.

I remembered that the registration of my car expired. Found out the warant expired ass well. Oops! They want $350 - $400 for repairing. Money I did not want to expend but unfortunately I have to.

33. Week_____ 27 November - 3 December 2008

7 days sunny The beginning of summer was on 1st December. You see, everyday sun. We had real hot weather for three days. Of course I had to work. In the evening also in the hostel.

On friday we had our free weekly barbeque in the Crash Palace. On tuesday and wednesday, my day offs, I was very lazy. That is what I needed. In the evening I was with my flatmates and Tine, another german girl, at a bar. I moved from my luxury double room to a six bed dorm. The hostel is getting fuller so they need every double room. was not very impressed in the beginning. Our room is the workers room. Four other girls are working here at the moment.

6 days sunny ... 1 day rain This week was not very spectacluar. Us girls we played drinking games in our room. Should not do it too much if you have to work the next morning. hehe

35. Week_____ 11 - 17 December 2008

6 days sunny ... 3 day rain ... 3 days overcast Hello friends and family, I did it, I booked and fully paid my flight back home to Germany. My flight itinerary: 16th April:    Christchurch - Auckland - Hongkong

21st April:    Hongkong - Tokyo

10th November:     Singapore - Hongkong

12th November:    Hongkong - London

14th November:    London - Hamburg Still have a long journey coming up. I can change the datas easily. Have to maybe if I am running out of money. How I will get from Tokio to Singapore (only!!! 5313 km)  I do not know yet. I will find out when I am there. I also do not know which countries I will visit.  After Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia maybe Nepal and India - thats my plan for the moment.

On monday Tony, Lena and I cooked a typical north-/ south-german meal for Chris and Toni. Both of them loved our 'Spaetzle' (kind of pasta), Cheese-'Spaetzle', mixed veggies and Rissoles.

Recently the Lava Bar starts every tuesday to give free pizza away - sure that is something for me.

36. Week_____ 18 - 24 December 2008

4 days sunny ... 1 day rain ... 2 days overcast Sarah and me we finally found someone to playing board games with. I won this time, hehe.

Again another Christmas Eve out of Germany - the third so far and probably the last one in a row. I am still not in the mood for christmas although Lena and Toni were singing christmas songs all the time and they decorated the whole hostel. We also had a chrstmas tree. Did not help that much.

37. Week_____ 25 - 31 December 2008

3 days sunny ... 1 day rain ... 3 days overcast On Christmas Day everbody had a day off. It is the only public holiday here. Chris made a BBQ as a Christmas meal. That was really yammy. We had meat, ham, heaps of salads and also dessert. Over christmas Sarah was with her family - or better with Chris' family over christmas. They live further away.

So Christmas is over, work again. The 25th was my only day off this week. At New Year's Eve I went with Lena and Tony to the Bar 'Grumpy Mole'. For Christmas we got a $50 drink voucher for the bar together with a bottle of alcohol from the hostel.

In 2009 we went to the backpackers bar 'Lava Bar'. So that was 2008. 3/4 of it I spent in Rotorua and the rest driving around Australia.
