First Taste of Bali
From Bali and Tokyo in Nusa Dua, Indonesia on Jan 22 '08
So Bali's main industry is tourism, and this is quite apparent, although not always in a bad way. The tourists are quite multicultural, with a large helping of Japanese and then lots of everything else (Chinese, Korean, German, Dutch, Estonian, Russian, Canadian), except the Americans are conspicuously absent (we've seen one so far). Of course, this suits us just fine. It suits Max just fine too - he has hugged all sorts of different children already - most of them cry or run away, even if they're older!
Max has been super so far, except at meals. He is happy, however, that the breakfast buffet always includes pancakes or waffles - his favorite food!
The Balinese seem to be a genuinely happy people.
The Balinese seem to be a genuinely happy people. You never can tell in a hotel, where they are paid to smile, but out on the streets, you see a lot more smiles with regular people coming & going than you ever see in Canada. Their culture is geared towards harmony - we're guessing that makes all the difference, even with very little money. Their first priority for their prayers is safety, and luck/success comes second. As soon as you spend more than three seconds on the roads, you understand why they pray for safety. More on this later...
