Luis and the guys next door decided to rent a truck and go surf Rancho Santana and Popoyo for 2 days. Luis handled the truck rental and 8 guys were waiting when he pulled up in a shortbed pickup. We strapped everything to the roof, grabbed the cushions off the couch inside to sit on in the truck and loaded up for a 3 hour drive. The back of the truck was surprisingly comfortable, but you should have seen the looks we were getting from the Nicas we passed. Which is really saying something coming from a culture that doesn't think twice about hog-tying a pig, goat, or calf and throwing it on top of a public bus. Check out the photo of all our crap on the tiny little truck, its priceless.

Our first surf stop was a break called Rancho Santana, a heavy and hollow little rivermouth just before Popoyo. We arrived at the wrong tide but still managed to snag some really good fun waves before the tide closed it out.
Beware of monkeys drinking your beer and pleasuring themselves.
Surfing Popoyo with the guys was a crazy experience. Unfortunately with 8 of us in the water we kind of took over the lineup and had to jockey and be polite to the locals. A good swell was fading but I still managed to catch some amazing waves by being the first one in the water at 5:30 the next morning.

The bar at the corner of the rivermouth has the craziest monkey on a leash. Luis got attacked, it tried to drink our beer, and ultimately sat on a perch and masterbated. I'll spare you all the pictures of that but it was hilarious.
We picked up some more travelers on our way back to San Juan del Sur, stopped every couple kilometers for another case of cold Tona, and rounded off a great 2 day trip.
