From Juazeiro do Norte our plan had been to take a bus straight to Recife and skip João Pessoa all together. However, our plans are continuously changing and we ended up going back to the capitol of Paraiba where Andre had stayed for two weeks during Marcela´s trip to Chile. In the end, we were very glad to have had the chance to go back to João Pessoa because it is absolutely gorgeous and there is this sense of tranquility everywhere you go. This city is the third oldest in Brazil and claims to have more trees than any other capital city.....we don´t agree with this last statement since we found Natal and Recife to have many more trees nestled all throughout the city, where as João Pessoa seems to only have certain large areas where there is a concentration of trees.

Our stay in João Pessoa was of only three days, but we kept ourselves busy. One of the days we gave into the idea of snorkeling over some reefs and we took a boat out to the Picãozinho. We were a very large group of people with two other boats besides ours, and the saddest part was that there really wasn´t much marine life to see. It seems as though they have not put much effort into protecting these areas, and now all that is left are the algae growing atop the dead corals and the few species of fish that are able to survive in those conditions. We also visited the easternmost point of the continent, Ponta do Seixas, where a very unique lighthouse stands. Our visit to the historic center of João Pessoa was full of surprises, with beautiful baroque churches and amazing views. On the last day we made an attempt to visit the botanical garden, only to find out it was closed on weekends!

Hanging out by the beach is also a perfect activity. There is a long strand stretching the entire length of the beach full of great restaurants and one of the best artisan markets we have seen so far. If there´s anything bad to say about João Pessoa at all, it is that there is a disturbing amount of people begging for money. We tend to see this in most places we visit, but in this city it was overwhelming because it happened everywhere we went.

De Juazeiro do Norte, nosso plano seria pegar um ônibus direto pra Recife e passar direto por João Pessoa. Entretanto, nossos planos estão mudando continuamente e acabamos indo de volta para a capital da Paraíba, onde André ficou por duas semanas durante a viagem de Marcela para o Chile. No final, ficamos muito felizes por ter a chance de voltar para João Pessoa, porque é absolutamente linda e há uma sensação de tranquilidade em todo lugar que você vai. Esta cidade é a terceira mais velha do Brasil, e dizem ter mais árvores do que qualquer outra capital... nós não concordamos com esta última afirmação, já que achamos que Natal e Recife possuem muito mais árvores por toda cidade, enquanto em João Pessoa parece apenas possuir algumas grandes áreas onde há uma concentração de árvores.

Nossa estadia em João Pessoa foi de apenas três dias, mas nos mantivemos ocupados. Em um dos dias, nós levamos a idéia de mergulhar sobre alguns recifes e tomamos um barco para Picãozinho. Nós éramos um grupo muito grande de pessoas com outros dois barcos além do nosso, e a pior parte foi que não havia muita vida marinha para ver. Parece que eles não se esforçaram muito para proteger estas áreas, e agora tudo que restou são as algas crescendo em cima dos corais mortos e as poucas espécies de peixes que são capazes de sobreviver nestas condições. Nós também visitamos o ponto mais oriental do continente, Ponta do Seixas, onde se localiza um farol bem peculiar. Nossa visita ao centro histórico de João Pessoa foi cheia de surpresas, com lindas igrejas barrocas e vistas maravilhosas. No último dia nós tentamos visitar o jardim botânico, somente para descobrir que ele fecha nos fins de semana!

Passear pela praia também é uma atividade perfeita. Há um longo caminho acompanhando toda a praia, cheio de restaurantes e um dos melhores mercados de artesanato que vimos até agora. Se há alguma coisa ruim para falar de João Pessoa, é que há uma quantidade enorme de pessoas pedindo dinheiro. Nós vimos isso em todos os lugares que visitamos, mas nessa cidade é demais porque aconteceu em todos os lugares que fomos.
